Ruth N. Lenihan

West Des Moines

Ruth N. Lenihan, 89, passed Sunday, June 29, 2014 at Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston. A Memorial Mass will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial at Resthaven Cemetery.

Ruth was born February 8, 1925 in Des Moines, IA the fourth child of August and Anna Nelson. She graduated from East High School in 1943. She married Harold Lenihan on June 26, 1943 in Long Beach, CA., a marriage that lasted 66 years. While in California, Ruth was employed by Union Oil Company. Ruth retired from Preferred Risk Insurance Company in 1978. In 1974 Ruth traveled to Sweden to her parent's birthplace with her brother Henry and two of her children. Harold and Ruth traveled throughout the United States, as well as Ireland, Italy, and Germany.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Sacred Heart Regina Guild, and the Des Moines Pioneer Club. She served as a volunteer at Sacred Heart School, West Des Moines Human Services, and on the planning committee for the Iowa Senior Olympics. Ruth's hobbies included ceramics, gardening, and cooking; but she most enjoyed providing loving childcare for her grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Thomas (Sharon) Lenihan of West Des Moines, Vickie Lenihan (Bruce) Clark of West Des Moines, and Robert (Carol) Lenihan of Urbandale; eight grandchildren, Ryan Lenihan, Katie Lenihan-Gunn, Bridget Stark, Erik Clark, Daniel Lenihan, Sean Lenihan, Colin Lenihan and Chris Lenihan; and five great-grandchildren, Addyson and Aiden Gunn, and Chloe, Alex, and Brynn Stark. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and siblings, Henry A. Nelson, Victoria H. Nelson-Crippen, George B. Nelson and Marian L. Nelson.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

The family would like to thank Caring Hearts Home Care and Bishop Drumm for the loving care they provided to Ruth.
