David Walsh Obituary
David Walsh

David Alan Walsh, 65, passed away peacefully at his home June 28, 2014. He was born April 4, 1949 in Washington D.C. the third son, in a family of six children, of Warren and Ruth Walsh and spent most of his childhood in Louisville, KY. In his youth he played every sport, and developed his love of NCAA basketball. After graduating from the University of Louisville, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving as Lt. JG on an aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean Sea.

After serving his country, David pursued his master's degree in journalism at Kansas University and ultimately found his way to Des Moines in 1978. He worked for Meredith Corporation as a copy editor for home and garden books and then as managing editor for Northwest World Traveler magazine. For many years he worked as a freelance copy editor, proving to be one of the most sought-after experts in his field.

Beyond his passion for words and writing, the most important thing in his life was his daughter, Anna. David coached her team with the Ankeny Soccer Club for more than 10 years and during Anna's many youth dance competitions, David was always in the audience cheering for her.

David loved bicycling, volunteering as a Master Gardener, vegetable gardening, cooking (especially stir-frying), and collecting famous quotations. His favorite note to Anna was TFMMTHLDITWU ("thanks for making me the happiest, luckiest dad in the whole universe).

David was preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Ruth Walsh, and is survived by his daughter, Anna (Walsh) Konchar, his son-in-law Sam Konchar, his "grand puppy" Autumn, all of Coralville, and his ex-wife, Joy Taylor Wolf. Also surviving David are his five siblings and their spouses: Denny (Debbie) Walsh of Birmingham, AL, Rich (Sue) Walsh of Hialeah, FL, Paul (Susi) Walsh of Indianapolis, IN, Rita (Scott) Benson of Independence, MO, and Lisa (Eddy) Thompson of Louisville, KY. Many nieces and nephews also will remember his fun and loving spirit.

David's wishes were to be cremated and to have his ashes scattered over the Mediterranean Sea. A memorial visitation will be held 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, July 3, 2014 with a ceremony of reflection at 12:30 p.m. at the Reiman Gardens (Hunziker House) in Ames, 1407 University Blvd, Ames, IA 50011.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Reiman Gardens. Online condolences and memories may be shared on David's page at
