William "Bill" Van Zee, 95, passed from this life on Friday, July 4, 2014. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 7, at Meredith Drive Reformed Church, 5128 Meredith Drive, Des Moines, Iowa, where the family will receive guests from 10 a.m. until the service time on Monday. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. at Graceland Cemetery in Pella, Iowa.

Bill was born on September 30, 1918 to Gerrit and Marie (Valster) Van Zee. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. Bill married Gertrude "Trudy" Hoekstra on October 14, 1943. The first five years of marriage they lived in Pella, Iowa and Bill worked for George Hansen at the Pella Airport. Bill and Trudy moved to Des Moines, where he became the shop foreman at Elliott Beechcraft at the Des Moines Municipal Airport, until he retired in l980. Bill enjoyed motorcycling, travelling with his wife and spending time with his four grandchildren.

He is survived by his two children, Joyce (Ben) Ogren of Crystal Lake, IL and Willis (Pam) Van Zee of Johnston, IA; four grandchildren, Sarah Ogren, Nathan Ogren, Scott Van Zee and Dustin Van Zee; and two sisters, Cornelia Vos and Wilma Spoelstra. Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Trudy; parents; three brothers, Fred, Edward and Marion Van Zee; and one sister, Rena Van Donselaar.

The family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions be made to either: Meredith Drive Reformed Church or Disabled American Veterans, VARO, 566 Federal Bldg.; 210 Walnut Street; Des Moines, IA 50309.
