1959 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
Mary Therese Green Obituary
Mary Therese Green

Des Moines

Mary Therese Green, 55, entered eternal life on Friday, July 4, 2014. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 10, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Mary was born on June 12, 1959, in Chicago, Illinois to Carl and Agnes (Salvador) Robst. Mary graduated from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, where she earned her degree in parish ministry and elementary education, and where she met Tom Green. After marrying on June 26, 1982, Mary and Tom first made their home in Algona, Iowa before settling in Des Moines. Mary and Tom were blessed to celebrate their 32nd anniversary in the final days of their life together.

Mary's greatest joy in life was her family. In addition to being a loving wife, she was a devoted and caring mother to Laura, Dan and Elizabeth. She found greatest happiness in supporting her children in their interests, education, and careers, as well as nurturing them through their everyday moments and challenges throughout their lives. She handed down to her children the joys and priceless experiences she learned from growing up of spending time with her family, of telling stories, sharing memories, laughing, and enjoying holiday traditions with family and friends. She cherished her role as beloved daughter, sister and aunt, forever nurturing those whose lives she was privileged to touch.

Mary truly felt called to the vocation of parish ministry and dedicated her life to the faith formation of both youth and adults. Mary was blessed to work as the Director of Religious Education at Holy Trinity Parish (Des Moines), Assistant Director of Religious Education at St. Pius X Parish (Urbandale), Director of Religious Education at St. Francis of Assisi Parish (West Des Moines) and Director of Adult Faith Formation at Our Lady's Immaculate Heart (Ankeny). In her parish work, Mary delighted in getting to know families, celebrating Mass and the Sacraments with them and bringing them closer to Christ's love. Throughout her life, Mary's strong faith was an example to many of how to act with love, kindness, mercy and justice while walking humbly with God. She worked tirelessly but with great joy to lead people of all ages to know Jesus; to help them deepen their faith and to build His Kingdom as individuals, couples, families, parishes, and communities.

Mary was cherished and will be missed by her husband, Tom Green of Des Moines; two daughters, Laura Catherine (J. Patrick) Carruthers-Green and Elizabeth Green both of Des Moines; son, Dan Green of Des Moines; three sisters, Cathy (Lisa Barton) Robst, Liz DeCarlo and Joan (Mike) Tripicchio; two brothers, Carl (Maureen) Robst Jr. and Peter (Lisa Dressel) Robst; and her parents, Carl and Agnes Robst.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where a Prayer Service will begin at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to: St. Thomas More Center; Catholic Charities or directed to the family to be determined at a later date. Online condolences may be made at IlesCares.com.
