Raymond Eugene Nyswonger was born September 3, 1939 to Marvin and Eleanor Jean Nyswonger in Indianola, IA. He died Tuesday, July 8, 2014 in Reno, NV. Services will be held 11 a.m., Monday, July 14 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with family present one hour prior to greet friends. A Celebration of Life will be held in Reno at a later date.
Raymond attended Indianola High School graduating in 1958. After attending Central Missouri College in Warrensburg and Iowa State University in Ames, he followed his dream showing and raising cattle. He was the consummate cattleman beginning his own herd in the early 60s as he showed cattle for the Double Diamond Ranch in Reno. Ray was the General Manager of Double Diamond until the ranch sold. In 1995, he and Michelle Purdy and her daughter Tawni joined their households and love of Angus cattle. Ray worked for the Nevada Department of Agriculture and University of Nevada, Reno. His love of the land and cattle were the major focus of his life. Ray's generosity, kindheartedness, wry sense of humor and love of Angus cattle are legendary.
He is survived by his longtime companion, Michelle; her daughter, Tawni (Chris) Steiger; his mother, Jean; brother, Richard (Jane) Nyswonger of Mt. Pleasant, IA; niece, Karen (Greg) Blockhus; great-nieces, Katherine and Natalie Blockhus; and great-nephew, Daniel Blockhus, all of Minnetonka, MN; aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his father.
Memorials may be directed to Western States Angus Auxiliary and mailed in Raymond's name to Overton Funeral Home, 501 West Ashland Avenue, Indianola, IA 50125. Online condolences may be made at www.overtonfunerals.com.
