Charles R. Chambers
Funeral services for Charles Ray Chambers (85) of Urbandale, Iowa, who died on July 15, 2014 will be at 11:00 AM, Friday, July 18th at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Urbandale. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until service time with a light lunch after the service. Burial will follow the lunch at Old Avon Cemetery.
Ray is survived by his wife of 62 years Genelle, children Laura (Paul) LaFleur, Steve (Cathie) Chambers, Lisa (Bill) Leise and Dan (Jodi) Chambers. Ray was preceded in death by a son Jeff (Julie) Chambers. Ray is also survived by 11 Grandchildren, Lenise & Amity LaFleur, Henry Cowlin, Kate & Emily Chambers, Kristine & Eric Chambers, Jennifer (Ed) Beckmann, Matt & Andrew Leise and Lauren Chambers. Ray had 1 great grandson, Eli Beckmann. Ray has 5 surviving sisters Fern Dickey, Betty Schneider, Mary Moore, Shirley Shields & Wanda Chambers. He was preceded in death by his parents Elmer & Ada Chambers and siblings Lucille Keller, Donald, Harvey and Wayne Chambers.
Ray was born October 18, 1928 in the Village of Adel, Iowa and grew up in and around the central Iowa area. He graduated from Carlisle High School in 1948 and joined the US Army in 1949 where he played basketball across the European theater. After a brief stint in the Army Reserves, Ray was called back to active service for the Korean War. He was ultimately discharged from the Army in 1951 after 3 years of service. Ray returned home and married Genelle Rawson on August 25, 1952. After a brief stint as a farmer in Grimes, Ray and Genelle moved with their young family to a new neighborhood in Urbandale where they have been ever since. After farming, Ray became an over the road truck driver hauling cars, bags and boxes back and forth across the country.
Ray enjoyed playing sports as he was growing up and enjoyed golfing weekly in his years of retirement. He was always seen around his grandchildren's sporting events and concerts. In lieu of flowers please direct any memorial contributions to Aldersgate.
