Betty W. Forst Obituary
Betty W. Forst

Des Moines

Betty W. Forst, 86, was born October 10, 1927 to Paul and Dorothy Wood in Indianola, Iowa. She passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home at Wesley Acres on July 15, 2014.

Betty enjoyed spending time with her friends and her affiliations with various social groups including PEO, Compass Club and Bridge Club. She was always seen as one who was welcoming to others; inviting new acquaintances to join social groups then taking efforts to make them feel comfortable and included. Betty also enjoyed attending cultural and civic events and, at one time, served as a volunteer for the Des Moines Community Playhouse. Betty was an avid reader who enjoyed reading all kinds of literature and discussing books she'd read with the members of the numerous Book Clubs to which she belonged. She was also a voracious reader of "The Des Moines Register" and could frequently be found submitting editorials (some of which were published.)

Betty grew up in Indianola then lived for many years in Maquoketa, Iowa, where she raised her family. She moved to Des Moines in 1977, and held various administrative positions until retiring from her position with the State of Iowa in 1993.

Betty is survived by her two sons, Brad (Teresa) Forst of Phoenix, Arizona and John (Kathy) Forst of Urbandale, Iowa. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Lesley, Rachel, Collin, Carson and Katie Forst and her brothers, Richard (Janet) Wood and Donald (Margaret) Wood, all of Indianola. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, July 20 at Iles Dunn's Chapel, 2121 Grand Avenue in Des Moines. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made in Betty's name to The Des Moines Community Playhouse.
