Johnston

William Franklin Spikes, Jr., 92, died Friday, July 11, 2014 at Mercy Hospice. Private family services will be held at a later date.

Bill was born April 9, 1922 in St. Paul, NE to Judge William F. Sr. and Genevieve Spikes. He was a graduate of St. Paul High School in St. Paul, Nebraska where he played football, ran track, played golf, and pole vaulted. He had a love for music and was an accomplished musician (trumpet and piano). He served in the Army Air Corps in Hawaii during WWII after which, he completed his business degree from the University of Nebraska. On April 13, 1946 he married Elaine Sallander in Omaha, NE.

In the course of raising four sons, Bill (and Elaine) became involved in Indian Guides, Ham radio building, Boy Scouts, YMCA Swimming, Little League Baseball, and family vacations.

Bill was employed by Iowa Power and Light Company for 32 years when he retired in 1985 as the Insurance Manager for the company. After retirement, he was finally able to re-kindle his passion for golf. Bill played golf on the week days with his Iowa Power buddies consistently from the time he retired to age 88. He played nearly every day unless there was "ice in the bird bath".

Bill was a great husband and father to his family and a great friend to the people in his social groups.

He was a man of integrity and always maintained a positive attitude which he purveyed with subtlety and a quick wit. He will be missed.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine of Johnston; sons: Bill (Edie) Spikes of San Jose, CA, Steve (Jean) Spikes of Leawood, KS, Cody (Margaret) Spikes of Polk City, Monte Spikes of Omaha, NE; granddaughters: Dawn, Krista, Leslie, Emily, Hollyn, Kaitlyn and Allie, 8 great-grandchildren, a niece (Ann)and nephew (Tom).
