She later retired from nursing to become the bookkeeper for Heddinger Brokerage. Karen was active at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, singing in the choir, as Eucharistic minister and studying with her bible group.

Karen was a gentle, kind soul who cherished her family above all else. She spent much of her time planning holidays and special events for everyone. You could always find her at many of her grandchildren's school and sports activities. Karen's unconditional love touched numerous lives. Her love for all things Notre Dame is now reflected with a candle that has been lit in her memory at the Grotto on the school campus.

Karen is survived by her husband of 55 years, George, her children, Dave Heddinger (Mary Beth), Paul Heddinger (Jan), Julie Carpenter (Curt) and Lori Wellman (Chuck); along with her grandchildren, Sarah (fiance' Thomas Stadler), Jacob and Mary Jess Heddinger, Adam, Ben and Anna Carpenter, Joe, Kari and Keli Wellman.
