Dorothy V. Miller Obituary
Dorothy V. Miller

Des Moines

Dorothy V. Miller, 87, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Bright Kavanagh House, with her daughter, Kathleen by her side. A celebration of Dorothy's life will be held from 1-4 p.m., Thursday, August 7, 2014 at Southview Manor, 2417 SW 9th Street, in the Community Room.

Dorothy was born on April 14, 1927 in Des Moines, the daughter of Ada Irene (Orcutt) Hurless and Parker Landis Hurless.

Dorothy spent her life in the service of others. Groups that were the primary focus of her career and volunteer work include individuals with mental illness (specifically the National Alliance on Mental Illness), women & women's rights groups, and less fortunate families in the community. She was a member of Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. Dorothy's passions and the opportunity to help others took her to locations all over the United States and Canada. In retirement Dorothy found her way back to the town of her birth (Des Moines) where she spent the last 25 years of her life. Dorothy had a great love for reading, her family and friends, and her cat, Pansy.

She is survived by her three children, Kathleen Dillman, James (Karen) Dillman and Timothy (Sue) Dillman; and her grandchildren Andrew (Jennifer) Thimmesch, Colette Dillman, Christina Knox, Evan Dillman, Tim (Jennifer) Dillman Jr., Bernie (Michelle) Dillman, and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Stan Hurless and Marilyn Davis.

In lieu of flowers in memory of Dorothy, donations may be sent to NAMI of Greater Des Moines, P.O. Box 12174, Des Moines, Iowa 50312.
