Sydney Dengle

Des Moines

Sydney Henry Dengle, 94, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on August 14, 2014. Syd was born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1919 to Henrietta and Joseph Dengle. He grew up in the Des Moines area and graduated from North High School in 1936. From 1937 to 1942, Syd worked for the Boyt Harness Company. In 1942, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corp, trained as a B-17 flight engineer, and was assigned to the 95th Bombardment Group in Horham, England. On his ninth mission his plane was shot down over Rostock, Germany and Syd spent the following 13 months as a prisoner of war in Stalag 17B near Krems, Austria. Syd and Geneva Maxine Sheldon were married in 1945 and enjoyed 57 years of marriage. In 1953 Syd graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from Iowa State University. For 29 years, he worked as an engineer in research and development at the Meredith Corporation. Syd was a skilled woodworker and builder and an avid outdoorsman. Many days were spent canoeing the rivers of Iowa and the U.S. Much of Syd's time following retirement was spent in southern Iowa at "Denwald," the place in the woods he built for the enjoyment of family and friends. Syd is survived by his children, Linda Appelgate of Des Moines, and Steve (Cindy) Dengle of West Des Moines; his grandchildren, Mollie Appelgate of Ames, Nathan Dengle of Des Moines, and Emily (Zachary) Hesse, of Des Moines; his sister, Louise Chase of Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews. Syd was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and six siblings.

A memorial service celebrating Syd's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at the First Unitarian Church of Des Moines, 1800 Bell Avenue. Memorial contributions to the Sydney Dengle North Des Moines High School Scholarship Fund may be sent to the family.
