1928 - 2011 Obituary Condolences
Maurice Telleen Obituary
Maurice Bernard Telleen

Maurice Bernard Telleen, 83, of Waverly, Iowa, died on Sunday, August 21, 2011 at Windsor Manor in Indianola, Iowa.

Maury was born on May 8, 1928, in Gowrie, Iowa, the son of Edwin and Maude (Carlson) Telleen. He was raised on a farm near Gowrie and graduated from the Gowrie High School in 1946.

Maury was in the United States Army, serving 18 months in Korea. He then attended Iowa State University, Northwestern University and the University of Iowa on the G.I. Bill, graduating from the latter in 1948. On August 14, 1954, he was united in marriage to Jeannine Rae Sarchett at the United Methodist Church in Indianola, Iowa.

Maury worked for the Nebraska Dairy Breeders Association, in Fremont, Nebraska, as lab manager from 1948 to 1955. He then purchased the Midwest Pedigree Company and ran it until 1959. At that point, he became the secretary-manager of the National Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo, Iowa. While there, he and Jeannine started The Draft Horse Journal as a hobby. Deemed foolhardy by many, the venture overwhelmingly served to unite those interested in big horses. The heavy horse industry was not only revived, it actually thrived and a renaissance of sorts followed. In 1974, Maury resigned at the Cattle Congress and the couple moved to a farm near Waverly to work on the magazine full-time.

Besides draft horses, Maury held a strong affinity for Oxford Down sheep, Brown Swiss and Guernsey cattle and Border Collie dogs.

Maury was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly and the Percheron, Belgian, Clydesdale, Shire and Suffolk Horse Associations of America, as well as the Iowa Draft Horse & Mule Association. He was honored as the Percheron Association's Member of the Year in 1990, received the Clydesdale Association's Outstanding Recognition Award in 1995 and was inducted into the Iowa State Fair Draft Horse Hall of Fame.

Maury's memory is honored by his four children; Melany Telleen of Wilmette, Illinois; Jeffrey (Janet) Telleen of Russell, Iowa; Camille (Jay Franzen) of Indianola, Iowa; and Lynn (Lynette) Telleen of Waverly, Iowa; seven grandchildren; August, Henry, and Natasha Franzen, Hunter Telleen, and Brad, Jay, and Troy Jensen; and a sister-in-law, Darlene Telleen of Tempe, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Jeannine; a daughter, Natasha Gayle Telleen; his parents, two brothers, a sister, a sister-in-law, and a brother-in-law.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 26, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly with Pastor Deborah Wise officiating. Burial will be held in Greenwood Cemetery, Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly.

Memorials may be directed to the family or a charity of donors choice and online condolences may be left at www.kaisercorson.com.
