Ruth was born May 7, 1922 in Linden to Arlo and Martha (Dunbar) Gilmore. She graduated from Linden High School in 1939 and from Iowa State in 1943 with a degree in history. On October 1, 1944 she was united in marriage to Norman Ketelsen at the Linden Methodist Church of which Ruth was a member.
She was a middle school and high school teacher in Linden and later Panora-Linden. Ruth was the Linden Methodist Church organist for over 50 years and played for many weddings, funerals, and special events. Her piano and organ playing was beautiful and expressive. She was a Sunday school teacher and Bible school teacher, Cub Scout den mother, and unofficial mentor to many. Ruth served on the Linden City Council for several years and was the unofficial historian for the 436th Signal Construction Battalion reunions of which Norman was a member. She was a charter member of the Rho chapter of the ADK sorority and loved her sorority sisters and the work they did for others. Ruth loved to read and while at the care center served as the librarian for the other residents. Her room was filled with bookshelves and many books that were checked out by others to read. She also served as the chair of the care center Book Club which met monthly.
Ruth and Norman raised 4 children in Ruth's family home which was being built by her grandfather Dunbar and father when she was born. She is survived by her four children and spouses, Mike and (Rexanna) of Linden, Alan and (Kathy) of Linden, Jeanette Ketelsen of Linden, and Kristine and (John) Teale of Maryville, Missouri. Also surviving are grandchildren, Greg and (Jill) Teale of Raymore, Missouri, Adam and (Anna) Teale of Maryville, Missouri, Ryan Ketelsen of Panora and Amanda and (Byron) Gutshall of Waukee and great grandchildren, Rece, Rylan, Reid, and Rowan Teale, Kaia and Kason Teale, and Kayla Paige Gutshall.
Ruth is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and many many friends.
The special ones waiting to greet Ruth in heaven were her husband, parents, brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Maxine Gilmore, and great granddaughter Mallory Brynn Gutshall. Ruth loved family history and reunions. She is now enjoying the best reunion ever planned.
