Mark Pearson Obituary

Mark Pearson

East Peru

Mark Robert Pearson, 54, of East Peru, Iowa passed away on Sunday, June 3, at his home. Funeral services will be held at the Plymouth Congregational Church on Friday, June 8 at 11 a.m. The visitation will be held at the Hy-Vee Conference Center in West Des Moines on Thursday, June 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. A private family burial will be held.

Pearson was born in Lafayette, Indiana on September 8, 1957 to Robert and June Pearson. He graduated from Naperville Central High School in Naperville, Illinois in 1975 and then continued his education at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona, where he graduated in 1979. He majored in journalism and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.

Pearson met his wife, Eden, at the University of Arizona in 1976 and they married in Phoenix in 1978. They moved to Des Moines where he went to work in the farm department at WHO Radio. In 1980, he received the most coveted award in agricultural broadcasting, the DeKalb Oscar. He also worked as the Markets Editor for Successful Farming magazine and as Iowa's Assistant Secretary of Agriculture. In 1985, Pearson was named Director of Agricultural Programming for Minnesota Public Radio's commercial farm network, a group of fifty stations in Minnesota and Iowa carrying farm markets and news.

In 1986, Pearson entered the United States Naval Reserves as a Military Intelligence Officer. He eventually attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

In 1988, he returned to Iowa where he was employed by Southwestern Community College in Creston as the Director of Agricultural Planning and Development. This program was dedicated to creating income opportunities for southwest Iowa farmers. In addition to his work at SWCC, Pearson enjoyed raising hogs at his farm in Thayer.

Beginning in 1991, Pearson took the reins of Iowa Public Television's Market to Market program. He also hosted periodic specials on economic development, rural development, and farm policy for IPTV, as well as the station's annual coverage of the Iowa State Fair. In June of 1993, Pearson opened an Edwards Jones office in Winterset, Iowa. Soon after, he returned to WHO Radio as the host of the daily noon farm program, the Big Show, which he broadcast from the basement of his Jones office.

Pearson and his family moved to a farm in East Peru, Iowa in 1995, where he built a diversified grain and livestock operation. Throughout the years, he has been a popular speaker at thousands of farm, business, and financial meetings across the country. Pearson had an uncommon ability to bridge the gap between rural and urban Americans. With his radio show, television show, brokerage office, and speaking career, Pearson was truly a Renaissance man.

He served the Winterset community as: chairman of the Madison County Covered Bridge Festival, creator of the Winterset Parks and Recreation swim team, Little League and soccer coach, member of American Legion Green Rogers Post 184, Lions, Rotary, Madison County Cattlemen, Madison County Pork Producers, and confirmation guide at the Winterset Presbyterian Church and Plymouth Congregational Church.

However, above all else, Pearson was a son, a husband, and a father, in addition to the radio and television personality beloved by Iowans. His family was the most important thing in his life and they were foremost in his heart. He cherished the accomplishments of his wife and children.

Survivors include his wife Eden, his son Mike and daughter-in-law Heidi (Ramaeker), his daughters Katie, Betsy, and Ellie; his father Robert Pearson of Champaign, Illinois; father-in-law Tom Fridena of Scottsdale, Arizona; his sisters Kay (Dave) Haughey and Sarah (David) Garcia, and two nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, June Pearson, and his mother-in-law, Pat Fridena.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Heifer International P.O. Box 8058, Little Rock, Arkansas 72203-8058.

I went to Junior High School with Mark in West Lafayette, Indiana. I don’t know why, but thought of him this morning. We were not friends as much as friendly classmates. The person I remember is the person I saw on Youtube; charismatic and very (underlined) funny. I was sad to learn that he left us as soon as he did.

Eden,

I was so saddened to learn of Mark's passing from another former Navy friend.

Hope you recall Lynnette & I from the early Navy days when Mark and I were but Ensigns & Lt(jg)'s, alot of water over the dam since then.... Believe it was '89 when we were all in Hawaii, what a memorable time at Makalapa.

Mark was a one-of-a kind guy, so funny, smart, and nice and the world is a smaller place without him.

Our prayers and sympathies are with you and the family.

Respectfully,

Jeff Schuetz, CDR, USNR (Ret)

Eden and family - our thoughts and prayers are with you. It could not have been that long ago that we were all together in Arizona, could it? So glad we got to spend time together last year - a continuation of stories ranging from college times to today. Mark will always be one of my favorite people --- so many reasons for saying that but a kind and true man. We will miss him, we will always remember him.

My deepest sympathy goes to the Pearson family. Mark was one of those unique people with a zest for life and sense of humor that were beyond words. Whether it was listening to the Big Show, watching him on Market to Market, sitting on the next tractor behind him on the Great Iowa Tractor Ride, or listening to him narrate events at the Iowa State Fair on IPTV...I couldn't help but feel I knew him as a friend. And a friend, indeed, he was. We shall surely miss him.

I remember Mark for all his contributions to FFA and 4-H programs promoting youth in agriculture. Mark knew many kids in my class through 4-H and would have them call in to "The Big Show" to report how Earlham FFA did at state and national competitions. I'm sure he has done this for countless young individuals and brightened their days with guidance as they work to hone their public speaking skills.

Also a family favorite was tuning in to watch the state fair programs. We saw him live last year on and off camera as he was filming segments of the program.

Eden and family, words cannot express our sorrow for you all at this time. We have had many, many conversations w/Mark over the years, truly enjoying every one, and will carry numerous great memories of him. We were remembering one particular funny experience with him that involved a very warm day at the county fair and an obstinate and uncooperative bottle calf getting the best of the three of us. What a guy. What a loss for the Ag community. Our thoughts are with you at this terribly difficult time.

I must admit that I didn't go to farm shows to just look at machinery. Mostly because it was a chance to get to talk to Mark. He let me read a poem I wrote about our century farm at one of his "shows" at the Cattlemen's Quaters at the State Fair.I will be forever grateful to him for that opportunity. We will all miss his big smile and his ability to remember names and faces of all the people he met over the years. He was the best ambassador for midwest agriculture ever.Sympathies and prayers from our family to Mark's family. A memorial to Heifer International is so fitting because it will keep on giving for a lifetime. Eden and family - the smile - yes that's what most of us remember. It was a long time ago when our lives crossed - when Mark delivered papers for me when I was the District Manager at the Register. Always a joy to talk to him. I ran into him once at the State Fair and enjoyed that chat. Please know that God will be with you through this time and you will see Mark again. God's Blessings to you all.

Eden and Pearson Clan, Kelli and I are still in shock over this. It is to cliche' to mention all the traditional condolences but without saying it, we are there for you. I can only imagine the energy, humor and crazy antic-dotes that were "broadcast" in your home and behind closed doors. We are so happy that you shared Mark with us, he made a positive impact on my kids that helped mold some of their character, and made Kelli and I feel important enough to be called you and Mark's friends. Love you all.

To Mark's family - I am just one of the many who was honored to have known and worked with Mark. He had a knack for making others feel special. Everyone knows how kindhearted and funny he was but I'll also remember him as a strong and smart guy. I found this photo of Mark (and me in the crash helmet) from about 1985 when we were celebrity stock car drivers at the Boone County Speedway. I think we were laughing about them letting us actually race - and calling us celebrities. I will miss that smile.

Our family has watched Market to Market for years. Our kids grew up with Mark in our living room. He was like a member of our family! We were so shocked and sad to hear that he was taken so suddenly. We will keep you all in our prayers! May God bless you and give you His Peace.

Dearest Pearson Family,

Our deepest sympathy and prayers go out to you. May the knowledge that so many are sharing in your grief and the wonderful memories provide comfort at this time and cherish always. He will truly be missed by all. He has touched so many lives.

A little note: I was at the soccer fields on Sunday when I saw Mark come by before 1 PM game. He was bringing a pair of shorts to Ellie, who was refereeing with Noah. Ellie had on a cute skirt, instead of the usual referee uniform. Had to chuckle! So it's ……..Dad to the rescue. These little moments will be what a person will miss.

When you just see someone couple hours before, makes it very hard to believe. I am still in shocked by Mark's passing.

May God be with you in your time of need.
