Robert "Bob" Branson

Robert "Bob" W. Branson, 86, son of Harry and Florence (Parrish) Branson, was born January 20, 1926 near Monteith, Iowa. He passed away Sunday, November 18, 2012 at the New Homestead, Guthrie Center, Iowa.
Bob graduated from Guthrie Center High School in 1943, when he was just 16. He was the class president all four years of high school and a 4 year letter winner in football, basketball, and baseball. He attended one semester at Drake. He enlisted into the United States Navy in 1944. He served in the Pacific Theatre on a Landing Craft Tanker. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He went to work for the U.S. Postal service as a mail carrier. In 1948, he married Mary Moraine at the Christian Church in Guthrie Center, Iowa. They made their home in Guthrie Center for 35 years. Bob retired from the Postal Service in 1981, when he was 55 years old. Bob and Mary moved to Lake Panorama in 1983. They resided at Lakeside Village for 2 and a half years before they became residents at the New Homestead in July of this year with Bob in the nursing home portion and Mary in assisted living.
Bob enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards, writing poems, and cooking fried chicken. He coached pee wee football for 17 straight years and was a huge St. Louis Cardinals fan. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Panora and he was a member of the Omar B. Shearer Post #124, Guthrie Center, for over 60 years. In 2007, he was named Legionnaire of the Year.
Bob is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary of Guthrie Center; children, Kristi (Douglas Hickman) Branson of Austin, TX; Barry (Vanessa) Branson of Guthrie Center; Kathi (David) Sherby of Austin, TX. Four grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Eva DeLaney, and Norma Bailey.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at the First Christian Church, Panora. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Guthrie Center. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 20, 2012 from 4 to 7 p.m. with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at Twigg Funeral Home, Panora.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
