Wayne Franklin Bentley, age 83, of Glidden, died Wednesday, December 26, 2012, at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City, Iowa.
He was born December 17, 1929, south of Glidden, Iowa, the son of Willard and Eunice (Whitaker) Bentley. Wayne grew up at Glidden and graduated from Glidden High School in 1947. He then worked as a hammer mill operator. In November of 1951, Wayne enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with a Signal Unit in Germany until receiving his honorable discharge in October of 1953. Wayne then returned to Glidden. On August 4, 1956, Wayne was united in marriage with Doris Pauline Redding at the Evangelical Free Church in Polk City. The family then farmed near Glidden until retiring in 1996. Wayne was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Glidden. Throughout the years, he served as Sunday School Superintendant, sang in the choir and held many offices.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 29, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Glidden, with Reverend Lorinda Hoover officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, December 28, 2012, at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden. The casket will be moved to church at 8:30 AM on Saturday for viewing until time of services. Mary Ross will be organist and congregational hymns are "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Casket bearers will be Rick Schaefer, Scott Schaefer, Nick Wothe, Arthur Free, Dan Pottroff and Mark Huebsch. Interment will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery at Glidden.
Wayne is survived by his wife Doris Bentley of Glidden; two sons David Bentley and wife Mary Anne of Rapid City, South Dakota and Paul Bentley of Omaha, Nebraska; a sister-in-law Delores Bentley and two nieces and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Doris' parents and a brother Quinton.
