David F. Johnson

Johnston

David Frank Johnson, age 77, passed away Monday February 4, 2013, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa. He was born September 29, 1935, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Karl and Charlotte Johnson.

Following graduation from Des Moines Technical High School in 1954, he joined the U.S. Army, and served during the Korean War as a teletype repair instructor. David married Margaret McGraw in Des Moines on May 8, 1961. They made their home on 35th Street, in Beaverdale, had three daughters and were married 41 years. After leaving the service, he worked alongside his father at Johnson & Sons Service, Inc., the family business his father started in 1931. David eventually became owner and operator in the 1970's, and sold the business to his son-in-law in 2004, when he retired.

After Margaret's passing he was lucky to find love again and married Barbara K. Thorsheim in November 2004. He was an avid golfer and loved to play bridge and spend time with his friends. David and Barbara enjoyed splitting their time between Iowa and Arizona.

David is survived by his loving wife of eight years, Barbara K. Thorsheim of Johnston Iowa; two daughters, Michelle (Mark) Schneider of West Des Moines, Iowa; and Lisa Deal of Nashville, Tennessee; four grandchildren, Matthew Schneider, Mollie (Justin) Farlow, Cade Deal and Aislinn Deal; one great-grandchild Austyn Farlow; two brothers, Karl (Reggie) Johnson and Robert (Karla) Johnson both of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Cynthia, his parents, Karl and Charlotte and his wife, Margaret.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. February 7, 2013, at Sunset Funeral Chapel, 7601 Fleur Drive, Des Moines, with burial following at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday February 6, 2013 at the Sunset Funeral Chapel.
