Edward Lee Faaborg

Johnston

Edward Lee Faaborg, 89, died on Monday, March 25, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 29, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 600 Sixth Ave. in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. immediately following the visitation. Burial with military honors will be held at Resthaven Cemetery, 801 19th St. in West Des Moines.

Edward was born on October 2, 1923 in Kimballton, IA, to George S. and Meta (Jensen) Faaborg. He spent his youth in the Danish community and was very proud of his heritage. Edward attended grade school in Kimballton. He graduated from Audubon High School where he excelled in academics and all sports. He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1942 and served three years in the Western Pacific Air Offensive. Following his honorable discharge, he attended Drake University, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. He was united in marriage to Martha June (Van Gorkom) Faaborg in 1951 and began his career in pharmacy, and owned and operated Sherwood Pharmacy in Windsor Heights. After selling his business, he managed several pharmacies in the Des Moines and Ankeny areas until his retirement in 1980.

Ed was a lifetime Cubs fan. He enjoyed his well-tended flower and vegetable garden, golfing, traveling, hunting and fishing Canadian waters for many years. He loved classical music, singing, poetry, and spending time with his extended families at all special occasions. He also enjoyed attending St. John's church services, where he was a faithful member for 60 years.

Edward leaves to cherish his memory, his best friend and wife, June of Johnston, Iowa. Many nieces, nephews and godchildren showed great affection for their Uncle Ed as did his wife's two sisters, a brother and their spouses. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and three sisters.

Ed's wit, humor, intellect, humility and generosity will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church.
