Ruby Jean (Lathrop) Charter, 95, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2013, at the Madrid Home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., on Saturday, May 25, in the Sanborn Memorial Chapel at the Madrid Home, where the family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service time on Saturday. Burial will take place at Fairview Cemetery, north of Madrid, Iowa.
Ruby was born on September 13, 1917, in Guthrie County, Iowa, the sixth child of seven to Arthur W. and Ruby Almenia (Brand) Lathrop. She was united in marriage to Elston M. Charter on January 7, 1935, and to this union, one daughter, Ramona was born.
Ruby was a hard worker all her life, grading eggs and working in two different hot lunch programs. However, family was a top priority for Ruby. When her two grandsons took swimming lessons, she mastered her fear of the water to learn to swim. She even went on to learn to water ski, which led to many family memories. Ruby was always there to help on all the projects that the family would embark on.
Ruby and her husband were active in square dancing and round dancing for over 30 years. They loved camping throughout the U.S. and wintered in Arizona for about 20 years.
She leaves to mourn her passing, her only child, Ramona (Floyd "Pinkie") Gibbons of Madrid; grandsons, Kerry (Becky) Gibbons of New River, AZ and Kevin Gibbons of Madrid; one brother, Arthur Lathrop of Dallas Center; one great-granddaughter, two great-grandsons, three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elston Charter; three brothers, Max, George and Donald Lathrop; and two sisters, Ruth Lathrop and Margaret Snyder.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Madrid Home.
