Raphael Joseph Meng died peacefully at 93 on June 19, 2013, at home, with family by his side. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Eugene, July 9, at 11 a.m.
Ray was born in Des Moines, on January 20, 1920, to Raphael and Ida Meng. He graduated from Dowling in 1938, and served in the Army during WWll in North Africa and Europe.
He married the love of his life, Rose Imogene Witherspoon (Jean) in 1945. They settled in Des Moines, where Ray attended Drake University, and they raised their family. Ray worked for the IRS for 31 years, retiring to Springfield in 1977.
Ray is survived by Jean; daughters, Linda Meng and Nancy Meng-Frecker (John); son, Chris Meng (Patsy); daughters-in-law, Roxie Meng and Cindy Meng; sister, Clare Ziegler; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Meng and June Witherspoon; brother-in-law, Herold Witherspoon.
Ray and Jean were blessed with 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Ray was affectionately known as "Uncle Buddy" to his much loved nieces and nephews, and will be missed by many good friends.
He was preceded in death by sons, Robert (Bob - November 23, 2009), Thomas (Tom - February 4, 2010) and Timothy (Timmy - in infancy); sisters, Mary and Margaret Ann, and brother, Phil.
Our dad was a very friendly and outgoing man who loved to talk and joke, and made friends wherever he went. He was a passionate believer in his Catholic faith, his family, his Democratic politics, and in doing service for others less fortunate than he always believed he was.
He was an active member of the St. Vincent de Paul for over 65 years.
Mom and Dad enjoyed traveling, especially along the Oregon coast. The family gathered there every summer and it was the greatest joy to Dad. He always said that he and Mom were the luckiest people in the world because they had such a great family. We were the lucky ones.
