Dr. Robert A. Lohnes

Dr. Robert A. Lohnes died on July 15, 2013 of MDS. He was Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering and University Professor at Iowa State University. Bob was born February 5, 1937 in Springfield, OH, the only child of Paul Edward Lohnes and Betty Laura (MacGregor) Lohnes. He studied two years at Wittenberg College and graduated from Ohio State University in 1959. He completed graduate studies at Iowa State University and received his Ph.D. in 1964. Upon Completion of his graduate work, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Geology at Wisconsin State University - River Falls. One year later, he returned to Iowa State as Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering and worked up through the academic ranks to retire in 2005. Robert served as a Visiting Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey in 1973 to 74.
He is survived by his wife, Diane (Brodsky) Lohnes of West Des Moines, IA; and his first wife and mother of his children, Jane (Wiegel) Lohnes of Ames, IA. He has two surviving children, Mark Alan Lohnes (Alenia) of Lincoln, NE, Molly Jane Lohnes of Winona, MN and one grandson, Paul Alan Lohnes of Lincoln, NE. Bob has two surviving stepdaughters, Mia (Kelly) Singer of Phoenix, AZ and Julie (Brad) Devine of Chandler, AZ; three step grandsons, Tate Singer, Drew and Graham Devine.
One of Bob's many passions was travel, always beginning a trip or vacation with the phrase, "And the adventure begins." While his travel adventures have come to an end, his enjoyment of life will always be remembered. According to his wishes, he has been cremated and will be buried in his hometown of Springfield, OH following a graveside service.
