Martin W. Cernetisch, Jr.
Martin Walter "Marty" Cernetisch Jr., 89, formerly of Des Moines, passed from this life on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at the Madrid Home, in Madrid, IA. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 26, at the Sanborn Memorial Chapel in the Madrid Home, where the family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service time on Saturday, at the Madrid Home. Cremation rites will follow services on Saturday. A private burial of the cremated remains will take place on Monday, October 28, at Shaul Cemetery, in Ottumwa, Iowa.
Martin was born October 3, 1924, in Davenport, IA. He grew up in Davenport, Muscatine, Iowa City, and Ottumwa. Martin enlisted in the Navy in June 1942, and was assigned to be an electrician on the USS Honolulu, a cruiser that was involved in many battles in the Pacific during World War II. After being discharged, Marty returned to Ottumwa, IA, and in 1947, he met his bride to be, Mabel Speirs. They were married on October 3, 1948, Marty's 24th birthday. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Des Moines, IA, and Marty worked for Equitable of Iowa as the Chief of Building Maintenance for almost 40 years. Following his retirement, Marty and Mabel moved to Madrid, IA, in 1996. They immediately became active in the community, including managing the Greater Love organization for many years.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his three children, Ruth (Tom) Stamatelos of Riverside, CA, John (Carol) Cernetisch of Katy, TX and Miriam (Russ) Gibbs of New Port Richey, FL; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Marty was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mabel; and one son, David. Marty was also grateful to have dear friends, Jerry and Debby Wylie, and their children, in his life for the past 24 years.
