Richard "Dick" Lee Goldner

Richard "Dick" Goldner, 79, passed away Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the Senior Suites in Urbandale. Dick is survived by his wife, Doris; son, Mark (Julie) and two grandsons, Ezra and Caleb Goldner of Ankeny, IA; a daughter, Gail Johnson of Johnston, IA; two sisters-in-law, Mary Goldner of San Antonio, TX and Ann Goldner of Vista, CA; two nieces, a nephew and many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Vera Goldner of Creston, IA; and his brothers, Lyle Goldner of San Antonio, TX and Loren Goldner of Dumas, TX.

Dick was born March 17, 1934 in Mt. Ayr, IA. He was raised on a farm five miles north of Mt. Ayr until he joined the Army in 1955-1957. He moved to Des Moines in 1957 where he met his wife Doris at a West Des Moines roller skating rink. Dick and Doris were married on September 6, 1959. Dick worked at the U.S. Post Office for 33 ½ years; he worked as an Area Maintenance Technician at the time he retired in 1989. He worked on safes and remodeled post offices throughout the state of Iowa.

He was involved with several different organizations. He was a member of the Waveland Park Masonic Lodge; belonged to the Public Relations unit of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine; was a member of the NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees); and was an active member of the Creekside Church (fka: Cornerstone Church).

Dick was a handyman; he enjoyed working on his house and helping his kids with their houses. Dick and Doris enjoyed camping and traveled south for the winters to Harlingen, TX for several years after their retirement.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Friday, December 27, 2013 at Merle Hay Funeral Home, 4400 Merle Hay Road in Des Moines with burial following at Chapel Hill Gardens. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his honor to the Creekside Church Building Fund, 2743 82nd Place, Urbandale, IA 50322.
