Dr. Robert Hermann, 93, died peacefully on December 26, 2013 at Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston.
Born November 12, 1920 in Des Moines, Bob was the only son of Les and Peg Hermann. He attended Roosevelt High School and Iowa State University before marrying Helen McGrevey. He then entered the military during World War II as a member of the Army Air Corps. He was the owner of Hermann's Salvage store in Des Moines before receiving his Masters degree from Drake University and becoming a college professor at Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota. During his 20 years of academic life, he received his Doctoral Degree from the University of South Dakota. He retired in 1985, moved back to Des Moines and was a member of many organizations. He was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, an Associate of the Dominican Order, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and organized the Roosevelt Graduates lunch club. Bob is survived by two sons: Robin (Peggy) of Waukee and Jeff (Lynn) of Des Moines; three daughters: Mary Anne (Nick) Cortazzo of Moscow, PA, Margey (Jack) Lipovac of Johnston and Kim (Michael) Darr of Granger; as well as 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 60 years, Helen.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, December 29, from 3-5 p.m. with a 5 p.m. Vigil Service, at Iles Dunn's Chapel, 2121 Grand Avenue in Des Moines. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 30, at Our Lady of Peace Chapel at Bishop Drumm Care Center, 5837 Winwood Drive in Johnston. Burial with military honors will be at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.
