Thomas Edward Vest, 89, passed away December 31, 2013 at Wesley Acres Health Center of heart failure. Visitation will be held from 3-5:00 p.m., Sunday, January 5, 2014 at Iles-Dunn's Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 6, at St. Augustin Catholic Church Chapel.
Tom was born December 3, 1924 in Quincy, Illinois, the son of Louis and Ida (Blaesing) Vest. Tom proudly served in the US Marine Corps from 1943-1945 and married the love of his life, Maurine J. Zeiger on July 2, 1945 in Jerseyville, Illinois. He began his retail management career at JC Penney Company in Quincy, followed by promotions that took them to Minnesota and North Dakota. The family moved to Des Moines in 1967, where he enjoyed the opportunity to manage several companies including Helzberg Diamonds from which he retired in 1992. Tom and Maurine began ushering at the Civic Center in 1979 on a whim and it turned into an almost 30 year part-time job at the stage door, for Tom, where he made many wonderful friends.
Tom loved baseball and was a life-long fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, attending spring training games in Florida, when he could. He was an avid bridge player, "master griller" and looked forward to pheasant hunting each fall. Tom always had a smile and truly enjoyed interacting with people. If he made a promise he always kept it.
Tom will be lovingly remembered by his three daughters, Nanette (Ivar) Jakobson of Osage, IA, Cathryn (Bruce) Roberts of Dunnellon, FL and Christine Newell of Des Moines; sister-in-law, Mary Lou VerKoulen of Evanston, IL; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren and eleven nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maurine in 2009; his parents; brother, Bernard Vest; sisters, Marie Jones, Cecelia Colbert and Shirley Smiley and son-in-law, Michael Newell.
Additional visitation will be held at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home, in Quincy, IL from 9-10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 7, 2014 followed by a brief service and burial at the Sunset Cemetery at the Illinois Veterans Home at Quincy.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Wesley Acres Adult Day Services and the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.
