Ronald "Ron" L. Hamm

Bondurant

Ronald "Ron" L. Hamm, 78, passed away Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at Israel Hospice House in Ames. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 460 NW Washington Ave. in Elkhart, with burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. at the church.

Born May 22, 1935 in Wakaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, Ron was son to Howard and Mable Hamm. He and his family returned to the United States in 1945 to a farm outside of Altoona. He attended Bondurant High School. On November 26, 1955 Ron married Darlene Cory at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Elkhart, and to this union four children were born.

Ron joined the Army and served in the Korean War. He was very active in the community serving as president of many organizations such as, Bondurant Booster Club, Bondurant Lions Club, Bondurant Little League and Polk County Fair Board. He spent countless hours donating his time and talents to Bondurant Farrar Schools on various construction projects, driving the equipment van for football and announcing at basketball games.

Ron had many hobbies including reading novels, fishing, golfing, restoring vintage tractors, and attending his grandchildren's sporting events. He was also a long time member of St. Mary-Holy Cross Parish, Elkhart. He began his professional career in the petroleum business with Tri-States Equipment Company, then transferred to Petro Equipment Company as a petroleum service mechanic, and later became president and co-owner of Petro. He finished his professional career working for Farmers Elevator in Bondurant.

Ron is survived by his wife, Elizabeth R. Hamm; children, Theresa, Thomas, and Nancy Hamm; son-in-law, AJ Breese, grandchildren, Logan and Austin Hamm, Elizabeth (Matt) Porter, Kelsey (Keith) Marmon, and Mackenzie (Jake) Breese; great-grandchildren, Levi and Waylon Porter and Alivia Marmon; and step-children, Deb (John) Christy, Diane (John) Gray, Donna Thornton, David Thornton, and Dennis (Gloria) Thornton. He is preceded in death by first wife of 45 years, Darlene Hamm; daughter, Karen Breese; parents; brother, Harold; and sister, Betty Grace.
