Dale M. Hanson, age 87, of Carroll passed away on Friday, March 7, 2014 at Ramsey Village Retirement Community in Des Moines.
Born on March 12, 1926 at Graettinger, Iowa, he was the son of Merl L. and Clara E. (Geil) Hanson. He grew up on the family farm northeast of Ruthven and graduated from Ruthven High School in 1943. Dale married Lorraine E. Monk on June 4, 1946 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Des Moines. He served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1945-47 as an aerial photographer. After their marriage, Dale and Lorraine made their home in Sheldon, Iowa where he worked as a photo engraver and city police officer for eight years. They moved to Carroll in 1956 where Dale worked for the Iowa Highway Patrol, badge 159, until he retired in 1980. Dale also owned and operated Rod's Key Service for over 30 years. He officiated men's 16" slow pitch softball at the state and national level. He was awarded the Humanitarian Award by the Carroll Chamber of Commerce in 1985 and was a member of the American Legion. Dale enjoyed gardening and raising both flowers and vegetables. He also enjoyed golfing, hunting, and fishing with his family and friends.
Dale is survived by his wife Lorraine of 67 years; two daughters: Sheryl L. Miller and her husband John Jr. of Windsor Heights, IA and Jayne S. Hanson and her husband Barry Kohnke of Carroll; son Rod Hanson and his wife Wendy of West Des Moines, IA; seven grandchildren: Army Major John P. Miller III (currently serving in Afghanistan) and his wife Mollie of Urbandale, IA, Matthew L. Miller and his wife Sarah of Johnston, IA, Mandy S. Cooper and her husband Kenny of Des Moines, IA, Stefanie A. Hoevelkamp and her husband Air Force Major Nathan of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Kyle P. Hanson and his wife Julie of West Des Moines, IA, Dana N. Hanson of West Des Moines, IA, and Navy Hospitalman Joel P. Hanson (currently serving in Fayetteville, NC); eight great grandchildren: Emma, John P. IV, Evan, Macy, Preston Dale, Spencer, Larkyn and Meyer; two sisters: Mavis Eide of Estherville, IA and Sarah Schmidt of Lake of the Ozarks, MO; a brother Dean Hanson of Estherville, IA; two sisters-in-laws: Nancy Hanson of Glidden, IA, and Lillian Wolff of Spencer, IA; and many nieces and nephews. Dale was preceded in death by his parents Merl and Clara Hanson and a brother Wayne Hanson.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll with Pastor Brian Licht officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Wednesday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Casket bearers will be Dale's grandchildren and their spouses. Honorary casket bearers will be the officers of the Carroll County Sheriff's Department and officers of the Iowa Highway Patrol. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Wednesday at Crown Hill Cemetery in Ruthven. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolences may be left for Dale's family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Dale's name and memorials may be left at the funeral home or the church.
