John F. Patton

Des Moines

John Fewell Patton, 56, of Des Moines died June 24, 2014 of prostate cancer. As a grant writer for a variety of Des Moines area non-profits, John helped secure funding for projects including the State of Iowa Judiciary Building, World Food Prize Hall of Laureates, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland's administrative and education headquarters, Meals from the Heartland, and the 1875 Flynn mansion at Living History Farms. Prior to his family's move to Des Moines in 1996, John was an award-winning newspaper reporter in his hometown of Lexington, Virginia.

John was born March 22, 1958 in Lynchburg, Virginia, the son of Jane Taylor Patton of Lexington, Virginia, and the late Claude Herbert Patton. In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife of 26 years, Pamela Messer Patton of Des Moines, daughter Rebecca Cady Patton of St. Paul, MN, and sisters Karen Patton Priest of Norfolk, VA and Olivia Patton of Lexington, VA. He was predeceased by an older brother, Claude Herbert "Pat" Patton, Jr.

John and his family want to express their gratitude to the caregivers at John Stoddard Medical Center and Hospice of Central Iowa. John requested that his body be donated for medical research at Des Moines University. Memorial donations may be made to John's alma mater, St. Andrews University (Laurinburg, NC), to the HCI Foundation, or to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, to preserve and protect the Iowa outdoors he grew to know and love.

John's warmth, love, and laughter will long be remembered by all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held at Iles Dunn's Funeral Chapel at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 28, 2014, with friends gathering afterward at the Yacht Club on Ingersoll Avenue.
