Etta Hulme, 90, passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at her home in Arlington. Visitation and funeral: Visitation will be 1 to 3 p.m. Monday at Wade Family Funeral Home, 4140 W. Pioneer Parkway, Arlington, with funeral following at 3 p.m. Interment: 2 p.m. Tuesday in Oaklawn Cemetery in Somerville. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, those who wish to do so may make donations to FINCA, Doctors without Borders, Tarrant Area Food Bank, or a charity of your choice. Etta Grace Parks was born Dec. 22, 1923, to Charles and Grace Parks in Somerville, where she grew up helping in her family's grocery store. After graduating from high school, she went to the University of Texas at Austin and earned a degree in art education. After graduating she packed her Model A and drove to California to work for Disney Studios for the next two years. She later went to Chicago, where she drew Red Rabbit comic books, and then returned to Texas to work as a commercial artist and art instructor. In 1952 she married Vernon Hulme in Kitzengen, Germany. After their return to Texas, she drew freelance cartoons for the Texas Observer. In 1972 she joined the Fort Worth Star-Telegram as a political cartoonist, and continued drawing cartoons for the newspaper until 2009. One of the first female political cartoonists in the nation, her work was nationally syndicated. She was the first woman to win the National Cartoonist Society Editorial Cartoon Award in 1991, which she won again in 1998. She was president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists in 1987. Etta traveled widely but especially loved spending time at her family home in Somerville. Everyone who met Etta loved her sense of humor. She will be missed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon C. Hulme, in 1983; and her sister, Mary Love Olsen, in 2012. Survivors: Sons, Charles Hulme and wife, Celesa, and John Hulme; daughters, Kay Hulme Hale and Helen Hulme and husband, Paul Nichols; grandchildren, Samantha, Sara, Ryan, Aaron and Emily; and great-grandchild, Vernon.

I loved Etta so much and worked with her for years. In 1998 while my dad was suffering from congestive heart failure I told her how much he loved her cartoons, she drew a cartoon of my dad I still treasure it. My dad passed away about a week later. Miss you Etta.

Kay and Helen,
I am so very sorry to hear of your Mother's passing. What a wonderfully lived life she had. I don't expect that you remember me, but I am Nancy Brown's daughter. Our mothers were dear friends and Etta was so good to my Mom till the end. My Mom always considered Etta her best friend. My sincere condolences to you and all of your family. Aunt Gracie and my mother Mary Love were as close as two sisters could be. It was a joy to see them together with the bond they had (and still have in heaven.) As early as I can remember, I always looked forward to going to Somerville when I knew my aunt would be there. Aunt Gracie always had time to draw pictures for her kids and grand kids. Spirits of those we love live on in our memories. Aunt Gracie and my mother Mary Love will live forever.

My family & I were privileged to live across the street from the Hulme family when I was a child. Mrs. Hulme & her family were welcoming & wonderful neighbors. My parents regularly enjoyed her cartoons & I came to appreciate her talent too. Looking back, I couldn't have asked for a more interesting & kind neighbor than Mrs. Hulme. May God give her family much comfort & love.

I loved Etta very much. I worked at The Star-Telegram from 1974 to 1987, and started a friendship with her. Betty Watts and I always took a break together on the third floor break room and Etta would join us many times, just before or after she turned in her weekly editorial cartoon. I would ask her what it was about and she would grin and say, you had better read it!! And I did every week!!
She was always so down to earth & so witty that she reminded me of my Great Aunt Ruth. She went to Russia once and brought me back a stacked doll and I still have it now. She was a wonderful lady and she will be missed.

What a wonderful human being was our Etta. I hope you don't mind sharing her because she is one of those leaders during my lifetime whom we all claim. She had a way about making me seem special - which meant so much coming from someone who I admired so much.

She was a good friend to my folks, John E. and Shirley Johnson, and even drew a cartoon for their 50th anniversary which they cherished. Papa and Etta met in a UT Austin literature class taught by J. Frank Dobie during WWII and was overjoyed to find that Etta was in North Texas when he moved the family to Fort Worth in 1969. She and Mama shared politics, the League of Women Voters and so much more.

We lost Papa in December 2013 and I am glad that he didn't have to grieve for Etta. He would have been devastated.

I was raised to believe that the highest praise that could be given was that one has made a difference in the lives of others. Well, Etta made a huge difference in her world - which truly spanned the entire world. She shed light where there was darkness, she made the comfortable uncomfortable and she spoke for the voiceless. And all the while, she was a beacon and a mentor to the women of journalism in this country that a woman could "make it" in what had been entirely a man's world.

Thank you Etta and thank you to your family for sharing you with us.

When I joined the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists in 1976, Etta was the only other woman cartoonist at my first convention. She was kind and welcoming--and encouraging to a young cartoonist. The guys all accepted her as one of them, and I admired that. Over the years, I have always enjoyed seeing her and talking with her. She even generously sent a blurb for a book I wrote in 2005. She was special to me because she did a cartoon for an article if wrote for the S-T as a guest columnist. She was kind enough to send the original drawing to my husband who gave it to me for a Christmas Present. That was in Dec. 1977.

Ms. Hulme was honored as an Outstanding Woman of Fort Worth by the Women's Commission. We made an exception for her because she lived in Arlington. She drew the logo for a booklet and t-shirt touting past recipients of the award.

The League of Women Voters of Tarrant County was so blessed with her skills at seven of our Celebrity Roasts where she did cartoon representations of the celebrities being honored. We remember her every time we look at our office wall where the framed copies of these cartoons are prominently displayed. We shall miss seeing her current work. We loved Ettas" liberal slant" even though we're staunch conservatives. She will be missed. She made us LOL more than once with her opinion/ cartoons. Fort Worth will always have a special place in our hearts for her. RIP Etta Hulme
