Bernice H. Smith, 93, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2013. Funeral: 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Mount Olivet Chapel. Interment: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Mount Olivet Funeral Home. Bernice was born Feb. 27, 1920, in Carthage to Pearl and J.W. Holder. She graduated from high school in Mineral Wells and then two years in Brantley Draughan Business College in Fort Worth. She was introduced to Capt. R.D. Smith by a friend. Before he was to return to Wright Pattison Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, they married. They lived in Dayton for a while before living in Germany for two years. This gave them an opportunity to travel to many countries in Europe. They returned to Fort Worth where R.D. was assigned to work as a test pilot on the B-58 project. He was killed in a crash while piloting a B-58 in December 1958. Bernice enjoyed playing golf, tennis and participating in ballroom and line dancing. She was an active volunteer at Harris Hospital for over 50 years and was involved in many volunteer activities. She was also active in the CROWC, a women's club at Carswell Air Force Base. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and one brother, James Wyatt Holder. Survivors: Brother, Charles Ray Hawkins and wife, Maxine; nephews, Larry Hawkins, Michael Hawkins and Robert Hawkins; nieces, Diana Daubenspeck, Beth Schimmelfennig and Michelle Taylor; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
