After graduating high school at age 18, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 with hopes of becoming a glider pilot during World War II. He was disqualified because he was color blind so instead, he joined the glider mechanics and was assigned to the 26th Mobile Reclamation and Repair Squadron. As he put it, "I carried a toolbox instead of a gun and we never got shot at." During the war, he saw service in England, France, Holland, Belgium, Trinidad and Puerto Rico. After an honorary discharge from the Army, Bill returned to Oklahoma and married Alma Jean Deel on Dec. 29, 1948, in Platter Flats, Okla., where he farmed until moving to Texas. He worked at the Squaw Creek Ranch with his brother, Shorty, and then for the Live Oak Ranch as ranch foreman for 18 years. After leaving there, he worked for the Granbury ISD as maintenance supervisor and Granbury Care Center as housekeeping supervisor. In 1975, he owned and operated his own janitorial service. Daddy and Mama belonged to a camping club, the Western Wheelers, which they enjoyed very much. Bill was a great husband, father and provider who was loved and will be greatly missed. Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Alma, of 61 years on Feb. 20, 2009; a son, Joe Wesley Ricks, on Dec. 4, 1990; brothers, Joseph, H.O. "Shorty" and Homer Ricks; and sister, Rosa Lee Peppers.
