Edna Mentz Martin Brooks, 97, passed away Saturday, June 1, 2013. Memorial service: 11 a.m. Saturday, June 29, in The Parlor of University Baptist Church. Edna was born on Nov. 11, 1915, in Philadelphia, Pa., to John L. and Clara Mentz. She grew up with two brothers and three sisters. She married the love of her life, George Martin, and years later moved to Patzcuaro, Michoacan, Mexico, to start an orphanage. They made their contribution with George teaching and Edna working in Puebla and Mexico City, raised their two daughters and returned to the United States to San Antonio. George passed away in 1978. Edna was employed in banking, retiring in San Antonio and resided there until she moved to Fort Worth in 2010 to spend her final time with her family. She married John Brooks in 1981 and he passed away in 1984. Her strong faith was her guiding light through all of the many challenges of her life. Her positive outlook and sense of humor made her a joy to be with even in her final weeks. A special note of appreciation to the staff of Trail Lake Nursing Home and Envoy Hospice. She was an active member of the Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile. Survivors: Daughters, Karen Davis and husband, John, and Mimi Wilson and husband, Stephen; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
