H.W. "Van" VanWesten(1933 - 2013)

H.W. "Van" VanWesten, 80, passed away peacefully Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, surrounded by family and friends. Funeral: 11 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Richland Hills. Interment: Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home. H.W. was born Aug. 31, 1933, in George, Iowa, to Wiard and Grace VanWesten. He faithfully served his country in the Air Force during the Korean War. In 1952, Van married Arlyne L. Jerman. The Air Force brought them to Texas where he was a crew member on the B-36 Peacemaker; he flew all around the world, but rarely landed outside of Texas. in 1970, Van and Arlyne moved their family to Hurst and there they raised their two children. Van retired from Bell Helicopter in 1996 after 32 years. In 2004 he was named the Herman J. Smith Man of the Year for his volunteerism by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Tina. Survivors: Wife of 61 years, Arlyne; his children, Robin and Roger; granddaughter, Brandi; his older brothers, Hilbert and George; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
