John Louis Hamilton, 88, passed away on Monday, Aug. 19, 2013. 2013. Memorial service: was 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at the Church of St. John the Divine, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard in Houston, where the Rev. Dr. Laurens A. Hall, rector, and the Rev. Dr. Douglas W. Richnow, senior associate rector, officiated. A reception immediately followed the service in the adjacent Sumners Hall. . John was born in Fort Worth on Aug. 8, 1925, and attended Paschal High School. John served in the U.S. Navy
during World War II
, graduating from Northwestern Midshipman School in Chicago before serving in the Asiatic-Pacific theater where he received the U.S. Navy Commendation Medal for Service. John graduated from The University of Texas
and was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. John returned to Fort Worth and married his childhood classmate, Ann Lowdon. The couple settled in Houston where John worked in the mortgage business before starting his own real estate investment company, which he operated for over 50 years. Active in historic building preservation, John worked to renovate historic homes in Houston, Galveston and New Orleans. In philanthropy, John provided housing to Vietnamese displaced from their homes after the Vietnam War
, received the Paul Daugherty Award from Casa de Esperanza for service to that organization, and along with Ann, created an endowed scholarship for the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Nursing. The family would like to thank Ann Belisle, Merle Rostant, Kalisha Askew, Yvonne Joubert, Beverly Thomas, and Tammy Roberts for the loving care given to John during the past several years. John was preceded in death by parents, George Morgan and Ollie Hamilton, and his brother, George M. Hamilton Jr. Survivors: He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ann Lowdon Hamilton; daughter and son-in-law, Anna Beth and Doug Hill; son, Caleb Hamilton; grandchildren, Cameron and Hallie Hill; and his beloved canine companions, Gracie 2 and Sallie.
