Karen Michele Tidwell Poer, 53, wife of Evan and proud mother of Sam and Polley, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, following a five-year battle with breast cancer
and leukemia. Funeral: 2 p.m. Saturday at Grapevine Church of Christ, Mr. Chauncy Willingham officiating. Interment: Medlin Cemetery in Trophy Club. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at J.E. Foust & Son Funeral Home. Karen was born in Denton on Nov. 10, 1960, and grew up in Roanoke. The third of four children, Karen spent her childhood in a close-knit community of dear friends and family who lived close to one another, attended the same church, and enjoyed vacations together. Those memories and loved ones remained close to Karen throughout her life. A proud graduate of Northwest High School and Texas Woman's University, Karen taught English and government for more than 25 years in the Southlake-Carroll schools. Karen cherished her time with students and the dear friends she made while teaching. When her illness required an early retirement, her love of teaching did not end. Her family and friends became her students -- she created trivia games and quizzes that she administered to family on holidays and at family gatherings. Karen's family and friends will always remember her quick wit and unfailing memory. She was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister and "Nana" whose support, love and laughter were always shared. Karen's family would like to express deepest gratitude to the wonderful health care professionals who provided superb care to Karen over the last few years. Specifically, we would like to thank the oncology nurses at Baylor Hospital Grapevine, Dr. Anita Chow, Dr. Joseph Fay, and Dr. Heidi Jordan for the attentiveness, professionalism and kindness they have shown to Karen and our entire family. We are forever grateful. Karen was preceded in death by her grandparents, John and Rosetta Tidwell, Irvin Green and Verna Dunn Copeland; her aunts, Eileen Tidwell Sheehey and Marcye Tidwell Ward; and her brother-in-law, Bill Drummond.
