Kelly Bliss Connell Thompson, 47 years young, left us altogether too early Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014. Memorial service: 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at Forest Ridge Funeral Home in Hurst. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis. At the age of 8, Kelly survived cancer after having her left leg amputated. St. Jude had just started a program of chemotherapy for children with this type of bone cancer and God and St. Jude's helped her to survive. When asked what it was like to be handicapped, Kelly responded with a twinkle in her beautiful green eyes, "Who's handicapped?" She could roller skate with the best. She graduated from L.D. Bell High School in 1984. Although Kelly fought personal demons much of her adult life, Kelly truly had a heart of gold. Kelly will be sitting in heaven between her beloved brother, Mike, and her idol, Patrick Swayze. Kelly was preceded in death by her brother, Mike Barcus; and her stepfather, John Farrell. Survivors: Mother, Kay Farrell; brother, Rob Barcus, both of Hurst; father, Rod Connell, his wife, Jane, and half siblings, Roy, Josie, Salem and Kyle, all of Illinois; aunt, Barb in St. Louis; and uncles, Don Thompson of Maryland, Hadley Thompson of Minnesota, David Thompson of Illinois and Ralph Thompson of Tennessee.
