Kenneth C. Axtell Jr. went to be with his Heavenly Father on Saturday, March 9, 2013. Born July 23, 1936, in Madison, Miss., he was the son of Kenneth and Eloise Axtell. Ken grew up in Madison County and went to Hines Junior College. After finishing his basics, he joined the Air Force. Ken entered Aviation Cadet School in 1958 and went on to become a master navigator and finally retiring as commanding officer of a maintenance squadron at Carswell Air Force Base. During his 22 years of service in the Air Force, he navigated B-47s out of Plattsburgh Air Force Base during the Cuban Missile Crisis as well as C-130s during the Vietnam War. He earned his master navigator rating and was an instructor navigator at Mather Air Force Base, Calif., teaching students from the U.S. Air Force
as well as friendly foreign nations. He continued his career at Carswell, navigating KC-135 and B-52 aircraft for the Strategic Air Command. Ken completed his degree at Texas A&M-Commerce while in the Air Force. He met his wife of 50 years, Ann, during his time at Plattsburgh. Their faith and conviction to one another were inspiring. He was known as son, husband, father and "The Maj" by his friends and family. Survivors: His wife; three children; six grandchildren; and two close brothers.
