Shirley Jean Shelton(1934 - 2014)

Shirley Jean Shelton of North Richland Hills left this life to meet her Lord and Savior, while family and friends were by her side, on Sunday, May 4, 2014, at the age of 80 years. She was born in Fort Worth to parents Orien and Lena Mae Graves on April 30, 1934. She married Harold Lloyd Shelton from Santo in September 1951 after becoming his high school sweetheart. They had been married for 62 years. Shirley was a longtime educator and administrator and taught in the Birdville Independent School District for 30 years. After retirement, she served as a full-time substitute for many years. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and teacher. She appreciated education and spent many hours educating her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She actively served her church, North Richland Hills Baptist Church, as a Sunday school teacher, ESL instructor, and was involved in many outreach program opportunities. She was involved in her community in various capacities and served as leader for many years in Bible Study Fellowship, where she obtained much of her spiritual growth. After she became a mother, Shirley obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees from North Texas State University and Texas Woman's University respectively. She was a mentor and counselor for many and left an "Influence Tree" with many branches. She believed every student had the capacity to learn and succeed. Preceding her in death were her parents and two brothers, Philip and Paul David Graves. Survivors: Her husband, Harold Lloyd Shelton; son, Mike Shelton and his wife, Sally, of Santo; daughter, Rhonda Sparks of North Richland Hills; sister, Sharon Booker and husband, Rick, of Haltom City; brothers, Bobby Graves and wife, Jouwella, of Santo, and Dick Graves and wife, Cheryl, of Richland Hills; grandsons, Hannon Sparks, Wade Sparks and Eric Shelton; granddaughter, Natalie Shelton; great-granddaughter, Everleigh Jae Elder; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation: will be held at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home in Colleyville on Wednesday, May 7, 2014, 6 to 8 p.m. A Celebration of life service is planned at North Richland Hills Baptist Church for Thursday, May 8, 3 p.m., and a private burial at Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park.
