William Prentiss Barrett Sr.(1920 - 2014)

The Rev. William Prentiss Barrett Sr., 94, passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2014. Memorial service: A celebration of Rev. Barrett's life will be held 11 a.m. Monday at St. Anne's, 6055 Azle Ave., Fort Worth, 76135. Memorials: It is the family's express wish that no flowers or other gifts be sent to the church. Instead we would prefer that a donation be made in Rev. Barrett's name to either St. Anne's or to Community Link. Rev. William Prentiss Barrett Sr. was born in Pikeville, Ky., in 1920 to William W. and Martha T. Barrett. He graduated from the University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn., with a double major in English and history and later received a second degree in theology. William was ordained as an Episcopal minister in August 1943. In 1944, he enlisted as a chaplain in the United States Army and saw active duty in the European theater during World War II. After the war, he met the love of his life, Ida Belle Armstrong, while stationed at Fort Riley, Kan. They were married with full military ceremony in 1949. He retired from active duty as a lieutenant colonel in 1965. William then served as an Episcopal minister until he retired in 1983, when he moved with his wife to the west side of Fort Worth. During the next two decades he provided assistance in local Episcopal churches primarily St. Anne's where he and his wife were members. For the last three years of his life, he enjoyed excellent care at The Waterford on Cooper in Arlington. He was preceded in death in 2003 by his wife of over 50 years, Ida Belle. Survivors: Children, William P. Barrett Jr., Martha Ann Hasni; grandchildren, Razi, Allison, Michael, Sara and Jill; great-granddaughter, Aaliyah.
