Gloria Enis Obituary

Gloria McKibbian Enis, 74, of Fort Worth passed away Monday, Jan. 31, 2011. Service: 2 p.m. Saturday at Shannon Rose Hill Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Gloria's honor to Best Friends Animal Society, a no-kill animal sanctuary, 5001 Angel Canyon Road, Kanab, Utah 84741, www.bestfriends.org. Gloria was born to the late Elva Richardson McKibbian and Frank McKibbian in Fort Worth in 1936. She graduated from Fort Worth's Polytechnic High School in 1954 and received a BA in art from Texas Christian University, and later a master of art from TWU. While at TCU, she was crowned the 1957 Homecoming Queen and 25 years later the Coming Home Queen. She was a Chi Omega and went to lunches with her sisters until recently, when she was no longer able. Gloria began teaching and earned many honors within the Fort Worth Independent School District, including serving as the magnet coordinator at Dunbar High School, the Bayard H. Friedman Hero Award, and the FWISD Outstanding Art Teacher Award numerous times. Gloria taught art with great passion, because she herself was an artist, and wanted to bring it out in others. Gloria spent many years at North Side High School in Fort Worth, where she touched the lives of many students. Her students there won many top awards and scholarships for the art that she helped to bring out of them, including first place in Imagination Celebration many years in a row. After earning her master's, Gloria moved to a Pietra Santra, Italy, a tiny village, where she restored frescos. Her adventures in Italy were things she loved to share with her family and friends. Gloria's favorite things in life were her family first and foremost, and then art; along with the students, she shared that passion with, her love for animals, and being environmentally conscious. Gloria McKibbian Enis was an exceptional person who will always be loved and missed by all who were blessed enough to have known her. Gloria leaves behind the legacy of a wonderful daughter, mother, grandmother, niece, cousin, friend and teacher. Survivors: Son, James Enis and his wife, Donna Enis; daughter, Jill Enis Hall, son-in-law, Mike Hall; grandchildren, Lauren Hall, William Enis, Matthew Hall and Ellie Enis; uncle and aunt, Wayne and Murel Richardson; many students; and her beloved pets, Tank, Daisy and Sunny.

I never got the chance (or courage, I suppose) to tell you how amazing you were - The things you did with those kids at North Side High cannot be matched, nor compared! I hope you are looking at us from Heaven with a smile... And I hope you are reading this and realizing how much you are still thought of and admired.

I miss you dearly Ms. Enis.

What a fun and free spirited person Gloria was. I have so many good memories of her growing up. I always thought she was so young and cool.... I remember going to visit her at her school once and she introduced us to her class and I was so impressed that my aunt was their teacher! She was so caring and helpful to me, my brothers and sister and our mother during a very sad and difficult loss in our life. As a young bride, she always made me feel like she was someone I could go talk to if needed. She loved her family, was a wonderful mother, and a very gifted and talented artist. To Jill & James and your families, you are in our thoughts and prayers. We love you.

I loved Mrs. Enis. I loved to see her in the hall way of North Side High School. Her hair pulled back in a pony tail wearing blue dickie overalls. Ready to talk "Art." She had great passion for art and her students.

What wonderful memories I have of Ms McKibbian, later Mrs. Enis. She began teaching at what must have been 21 years of age at Daggett Jr High, and already was a great inspiration to all of us. She cared for all her students and mentored them well, in spite of a lot of teasing from the boys, who rightfully thought she was quite beautiful.I am so sorry for your loss.

James and family,

My deepest sympathy for your loss. Gloria was a remarkable lady. She managed to put up with scores of high school kids that invaded her home on a nightly basis. We always knew her house was a place where we would be welcomed and could just hang out. She played a significant role in the growth of our friendships. She was one of a kind and will be missed. My prayers are with you all.

Gloria always called our Daddy " Uncle Buss". I will never forget that beautiful deep voice saying those words. We spent many Thanksgiving holidays in Fort Worth. Those celebrations were so warm and loving. Uncle Frank, Aunt Elva, and Gloria always made us feel so welcome. Gloria was a "movie star" to us and she had adoring fans. She was a remarkable woman with such warmth and love. We have such wonderful memories. The Richardson family from Orange, Texas ( Una, Mary Ellen, Carol, Doyle, Sue, Randy)

Jill and James, you are both in my thoughts and prayers. As I told Jill when I heard about your mother's illness, she inspired me to work with kids in need. She inspired many during her life and that is all anyone can hope to do. I send my love Jill and wish the weather had allowed me to be with you.

Though we hadn't spoken or seen each other in a long time, Ms. Enis has continually been in my mind and in my heart.

My main reason for attending North Side, a school on the complete opposite side of the city from where I lived, was not for it's high-profile medical program, but rather for its much lauded art program. As soon as I started school there, I discovered the reason for that fame, Gloria Enis. She created a haven, a home, a community for her students, and she took me under her wing. It's where my passion for art took root, and was nurtured not just as a class subject, but a way of life. A distinction that forever changed me. Borrowing from the copy of Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, that she gave me..... "Yes! Yes! Yes! He would create proudly out of the freedom and power of his soul, as the great artificer whose name he bore, a living thing new and soaring and beautiful, impalpable, imperishable" that freedom to follow my inner calling to art, is the true gift she gave me.

I spent the next four years at Stanford University (on scholarship, thanks to her), completely immersed in art. When I studied overseas my senior year in Paris, I often thought of her as I trekked those streets with pads and pencils in tow, racing from art classes to mentorships. The first half of this year, I lived in Rome and often pictured her studying and working in Florence, the city she loved so dearly.

You have profoundly impacted my life Ms. Enis. I love you, I admire you, but most of all, I AM because of you.

Love always,
Chae =)

Dear Ms. Enis, you allowed me to explore my admiration of art for art's sake and taught me how to appreciate art as an imitation of nature. Thank you for this priceless gift and may you rest in peace. ?

Ms. Enis was my art teacher from 96-98 at North Side High School and she is the reason for my good memories of high school. I developed a love of art because of her and ultimately studied art in college. My thoughts are with her family. I cared about her deeply but I know you loved her more.

As an artist, because of Ms. Enis, it is difficult to express in words the feeling of loosing one of the brightest and most colorful people in my life. It was she that encouraged me to continue with my love for art. Everything that I have done in my art endeavors I owe to her. The world is less colorful place without her. We are going to miss you so much.

To Gloria's Family,
I worked with Gloria during the Dunbar years. I admired her energy and the fact that she was "color-blind." She literally pulled skills out of our kids. "I cant't" could not be a part of their vocabulary. Here's hoping that now she gets the rest she needs. She was timeless in looks and more improtant in her soul.
Look to God. He will give you the peace you seek. Take care of her animals and yourselves. I'm not sure she wouldn't want you to do that in that order.
