Bob McCrary Obituary

Bob Bill McCrary, a true Southern gentleman, a jokester and a dear, sweet, kind man, departed this life Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, headed west into the wild blue yonder. Memorial service: 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation. Bob was born in Cushing to Grace Sitton and Allen McCrary on July 1, 1948. He played football, baseball and basketball at Cushing High, graduating in 1966. Despite having rheumatic fever his junior year of high school and confined to bed for a year, he still earned a baseball scholarship to Lamar University where he played football as well. Graduating in 1970 with a BBA, he went to work for Arthur Anderson, a CPA firm in Houston. His aviation career started in 1971, joining the U.S. Air Force and completing pilot training in Lubbock at Reese Air Force Base. Capt. Bob spent 10 years in the Air Force, his last three years of service flying his favorite plane, the U-2, out of Beale Air Force Base and around the world. Bob was extremely patriotic and took his highly classified clearance level seriously. He never spoke about his U2 flying days until last year after PBS aired a special about the spy plane. Bob was the youngest pilot selected to join that elite group. In a T-38, Bob broke the sound barrier twice, yet was content to drive his truck at 5 mph under the speed limit, which could drive you crazy, but you knew he just wanted to be safe! His post-military flying included Texas International, Muse Air, Trans Star and then Delta Air Lines where he retired in 2007 after 17 years. Because he was so enjoyable to fly with and very professional, both captains and first officers liked flying with Bob. Flights crews appreciated his support, calm demeanor and superior landings. He was blessed with three wonderful children, Laurie, Stuart and Gracie, his pride and joy. Bob married the love of his life, Anita Kay, on June 16 1987, enjoying her love and friendship for 26 years. Giving back to the community was important to Bob, who participated in several youth mission trips and delivered Meals On Wheels for three years. Bob's passions other than his wife and children were his friends, flying airplanes, horses, bird dogs and Bess, the black Lab. Bob loved living on his ranch on a hill south of Weatherford, where he was often heard to say to Anita, while sitting on the back porch enjoying the view and sunset, "Just another beautiful day in paradise." Survivors: Left to cherish so many good times with Bob are his wife, Anita; daughters, Laurie and husband, Ed, and Gracie; son, Stuart; brothers, Sam McCrary and wife, Helen, and Sid McCrary and his life partner, Les Weidner; sisters-in-law, Sandra Lydick and husband, Larry, and Sherry French; and many loving nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who meant so much to him in his life.

Anita, I'm so sorry to learn of Bob's passing. Bob and I were stationed together in Guam on B-52s. Unfortunately because of our divorces we lost touch in the 80's. I will tell you that I have known no finer man that Bob (we called each other Dirtbags!). I would have stayed in the Air Force as long as they would have let me...if they would have guaranteed that Bob and I could fly together. What a wonderful man!

Anita, I just learned of Bob's passing. I am so, so sorry. Too early for such a wonderful gentleman. He was Captain on my first flight with Transtar. At Delta never got to fly with him. He will be missed by so many. You are such a lucky woman to have spent your life with this beautiful person. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.. Sincerely , Carolyn Zeiler...Hays

People never forget how someone made them feel. I just recently learned of Bob's passing and I was deeply saddened. Bob McCrary had the gift of making everyone he met feel special. I didn't know his family, but my heart breaks for you. Bob was one of the finest people I've ever met. Everyone that knew him will always remember the twinkle in his eyes, that infectious smile, and his warm Southern drawl. May God bless and comfort his wife, his children, and all the loved ones he leaves behind. God Speed.

We loved Bob McCrary. He was one our family heroes. His was the only person in a church of thousands that had courage to stand up for a child that was being bullied by adults during a basketball game. His love and support will never leave our hearts. He was a true man of God. We will always have a special place in our heart for this amazing soul. Thank you for being part of our lives. Love always and forever, The Harbucks

Bob and I started to school in first grade and graduated from ole CHS together. He is one of the people when I remember my school years that I always smile when I think of him. He was a great friend just so sorry that in this busy world we forget to stay in touch with those that were such a big part of our lives. So good bye old friend and I know that you have already landed safely. My prayers are with all of the family I know he will be missed greatly.

October 3, 2013

I graduated with Bob at dear ole CHS. He was always very courteous....a gentleman. I am sorry the world has lost him, but the angels are rejoicing that another one has been admitted into heaven. I know he will be missed by many, and I do know the pain you are enduring at this time, as I lost my husband 6 years ago at the age of 57. May God give you the strength and courage to get through these following days.

Anita, Laurie, Stuart and Gracie,
You are all in my prayers and thoughts. Even through the tears yesterday Twink, Helen and I laughed about some of Bob's stunts as a kid when we were all growing up. He was such a fine fellow and we have lost a great friend. Know you will continue to be in my prayers.
