Harry Mason Obituary

Harry Naill Mason passed away Monday, May 6, 2013. Harry was born in New York City with a double cleft lip and a cleft palate. He needed emergency surgery upon birth to breathe and eat. Over the years, having many surgeries, he became tough yet sensitive to the needs of others. Growing up in the Bronx projects with a physical deformity and a single mother, he learned to be tough, yet always sensitive to the needs of the less fortunate. He left home at a young age, made his way first on offshore oil rigs where he quickly advanced to the top and acquired his position as a driller, and then as manager of a Texas communications tower company, Trico Tower Service. For the past 20 years, Harry put all his focus and energy into raising his one and only son, Nathan Mason, and going to work no matter how he felt. Despite serious medical conditions, he continued to work. Although he did not need to climb towers, he did so as early as a month ago. Harry will be remembered by his loved ones as being generous, loyal, dedicated to his family and, yes, difficult and grumpy at times, but who could blame him. He left us too soon, at 59. He will be missed immensely and remembered always. He was preceded in death by his father, Nathaniel Mason; and his mother, Mary Naill. Survivors: His son, Nathaniel Riley Mason of Arlington; sisters, Jennifer Mason Zurowski of Hobe Sound, Fla., Dovia Jenna Mason Fehrenbach of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Linda Duswalt Ciangetti of Manahawkin, N.J.; brother, Steven Duswalt of Austin; nephews, Matt Reece, Cliff Reece and Eric Scroggins; and nieces, Alannahg Mason and Stephanie Duswalt.

One of my favorite memories of Harry was watching 4 Surf City cops trying to get him into the back of the cruiser. Even thogh he was handcuffed behind his back they still couldn't do it. Finally, they just gave up and then after all that, Harry politely got into the car himself. It was hilarious. Oh by the way, the big time infraction? We didn't have beach badges.

I have a friend in Harry unlike any other. He and I were the best of friends and I am the fortunate one because of a life long relationship with an outstanding, unique, honest, loyal and truly compassionate person. Our history spans half a century in which the travels, trials and experiences make my life so much richer in every sense. From the dawn sessions of LBI to Fla to Cali to the gulf coast. Hooting encouragement to take the unmakable drop fearless every time. That was Harry. Teenagers hitching Coast to coast with a backpack, jar of instant coffee, sleeping bag, medicinal herb and $25.00. 5 days and 4 nights later we were camped at blacks beach and the story just gets better. Brought him with me to that Zapata interview as did the other 25 guys who were called. Of the 14 needed we both got hired to work offshore oil rigs. Semi submersibles, state of the art at that time. More great events over the years. I could go on and on about this amazing friend with the only regret being our adventures have ended for now. God bless and keep a truly humble and fine as example of a good human I've ever had the pleasure of calling my friend. Love always my friend.

My God Happy Harry, how do I put what you meant to me, & my/our lifetime of memories growing up/old exploring the world together. We met 100 miles in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico on a drilling rig in 1978. We saw Central & South America seeking profit, but only found cultural exchange with the local ladies & bartenders i.e. adventure. Harry liked adventure. And then there was Trico, some gave some, Harry gave it all. Harry, with both of his feet already having a portion already removed climbed less than one month prior to his death. Honorable Man, BEST work ethic, "a little different"
I love ya Harry. Your my brother always.

I thought of Harry as one of my brothers. He will be deeply missed. I first met Harry when I was about 12 yrs. old when he had just moved from the Bronx to Joshua Dr. Beach Haven West NJ. We experienced hard and good times together. He was my friend, surfing buddy and a person that stood by no matter what. I had a chance to speak with Harry about 3 months ago. We shared about the love of the Lord. I know they are together right now. Harry you will always be remembered. See you later buddy.

Harry, There are not words or emotions to express all that you have done.Your dedication to hard work family and friends always seemed to make you smile. When life got stuff you meet it head on. Your love for Nathan was always first but you never let family or frends down either. I know few men that walked taller than you.God bless you and comfort you. Thanks for being my friend.John Hill

I consider Harry as my brother, he will be deeply missed. I first met Harry when I was about twelve, he and his wonderful family had just moved to Joshua drive in beach haven west NJ from the Bronx. We grew up together, surfed together, got into trouble together. Our mothers were good friends to. He was a friend that stood by your side, a man of his word. I got to talk to him a few months ago for about an hour on the phone. Our conversation was on the love of Jesus, and I know they are together right now. I was very honored to know Harry, he will always be remembered.

I have lost a brother, born on the same day, and also lived in the projects in the Bronx, N.Y.C., got me my first job on the same offshore drilling rig. He got me out of the Bronx, in which I will forever be grateful for, have three kids born in Texas, Harry has brought life into this world, will miss a very tough man, with such a kind heart...Will never forget the journeys we took together, will see him again someday in a world of peace, love, and harmony. Your friend, Mike G.

This picture is sooooo like I want to remember him. His passing has left a huge whole in my heart. I have had so many conversations this last week with people whoose lives he touched, some many years ago, mostly from his time in NJ. It was inadvertantly missed in this Obit but he lived in Manahawkin, NJ from 1966 to about 1972, where he spent his teenage years and made many long lasting friends. His love of the water drew him to surfing on Long Beach Island and was his favorite thing to do. He did so much for family and friends, that will be his legacy. He was my brother and my Hero, my life will never be the same. Love, your sister Jennifer.

Harry, You were a remarkable man and an awesome friend. You were a man of your word and as with any great man, your word was your bond. I do not think you ever said "I can't". Everytime life handed you a new challenge you just met it head on and kept going. You inspired me. I loved your surfing stories, our many conversations on our "children", life and God. It was my honor and privilege to call you friend. Thank you for being such a good friend for so many years. God speed Harry, I'll see you on the other side.
Love,
Nancy
