Godfather Stephen...
I'm not sure if I can write something here that is worthy of you... that says how much I love you... how much I miss you... what a terrible emptiness has been left in your passing... or how incredibly fortunate and blessed I feel to have had you as my Godfather, had you in my life at all. You were a mentor, an inspiration, a rock... someone who loved me unconditionally and unfailingly. I still haven't accepted this... because if I do it means you're really gone...
I love you more than words can say...
Your Loving Goddaughter (Then, Now, and Always),

I worked retail in Fort Worth at The Fair and Striplings and in Houston at Sakowitz and Foleys. I knew Kathleen Bruton from one of the jobs! My stint at Sakowitz was 1967-1971 and Foleys was 1974-1986. God bless your family. I loved Stephen's music in Crazy Heart.

Remembering Stephen and listening to his music this morning. After reading all 42 pages of entries remarking how he was such a true, kind & inspirational person, his legacy will live on though all the many people who were fortunate to have known him. My thoughts are with his family, and his extended family, today and everyday.
I will close by listening to my favorite song " Too Many Memories" Yes there are.....
Play on Stephen...

I have been thinking about Stephen so much lately; Bad Blake comes alive in Crazy Heart through his music. We hung out a little in high school in Ft Worth - just 'simple innocents' in our sheltered world - even then, Stephen was a talent to be reckoned with; I may have been one of his very first groupies!
The Heavenly Band must be a rockin up there.....warm thoughts and fond memories of a fine and fun guy....

You made it look so easy, and it wasn't. It isn't. I can hardly find the words to celebrate the life of someone who captured the small moments, the ones we all experience, and turned our clumsy journey into purpose.
The first time I met you was in 1980. You seemed as happy to meet me as I was to meet you. Your music resonated because you created relationships, friendships; you noticed the moments. From Day Drinkin to Fallin & Flyin, your music has been the soundtrack for so many lives.
Thank you for your kindness. Your self-deprecating wisdom. And the hope that, it's never too late to turn things around. I hope that heaven is the place where you see the reflection of all the lives you touched.
I'm still teary and I know I'm not alone. Crazy Heart is bittersweet.
God bless your family and friends.

My sympathy to Stephen's family. I knew him at Paschal High School as the truly talented among those of us hanging around the folk club. When I heard of his collaboration on Crazy Heart, I was going to email my congratulations, and found that he was gone. He will always be in my mind as that kid with enviable talent.

I extend my condolences to Stephen's family-Stephen was kind and generous to me as a hero-worshipping. I spoke to his mother in 1974; Neither she nor he were angry(!) so I brought my mother to meet him stage-side at Radio City Music Hall-He believed me that I loved the music not just the starstruck glamor it was like my dad's memory of Benny Goodman's Carnegie Hall concert. Songs and artists gathered through this adolescent time have been my mantras, religion and daily friends through my civil service career and loss of my 94 year old best friend my mother. Sincerely, Marcia Walsh Hess 1973 Albertus Magnus College

Brother Stephen,
I can finally get myself to writing something fitting of our time together. Today I presented the formal written plan to create and produce your tribute/memorial....yes it will be grand and have all the trappings of the many events we conjured together, and include all the big guns to sing your beloved music - but damn Stephen, I so miss you and find it almost impossible to take the band through rehearsal in your absence.
I have "too many memories" my dear buddy - Max speaks of you often and misses you too!
So, yes I am on the case for the "big farewell" - but I would gladly trade it for a hug and a laugh down in the music room!
Rest in peace

This slipped past me, I was preparing myself for my son's deployment to Iraq, and busy with helping the Soldiers's families with the diffficult time ahead. I learned of his passing when I was on line ordering Kris' latest CD. Stephan was always my favorite band member, so sexy, and self assured, and so good on the guitar. It doesn't feel right, knowing he's gone, he was always smiling, and in such a good mood. The world is a little quieter now without his licks, may our God bless him and keep him in His Hands.

I had the honor of doing live sound for Stephen in Santa Monica for a few years. Was just looking him up and saw the news. I am so sorry to hear he's gone. He was one of the "real" cats out there and will be missed. I am just in shock. His music will always be with us.

The first time I heard Stephen was in 1995 when I bought a copy of a guitar mag and they used to include those flimsy, plastic records you had to tear out of the magazine (the early music sampler!!) of various artists and if memory serves me correct, "Bluebonnet Blue" was on that piece of plastic. I was instantly taken by the guitar playing/singing and burned that song over and over. I lost touch with Stephen's music, but when I heard the name from time to time, I was always taken back to that year and reminded again and again of his wonderful talent. As a singer/songwriter, I hear that song and think "Why didn't I think of that??". Because there was only one Stephen Bruton. I am very sorry to hear of his passing and I want to extend my thoughts and prayers to all of his family. Thanks for the gift you shared while you were here.....and we'll keep looking for the "girl with eyes of bluebonnet blue"....
Sincerely,
Billy O'Rourke

My favorite memory of Stephen was on one of the SBC cruises. We hit terrible weather and all the outdoor acts had to be rescheduled. Stephen ended up playing at one or two in the morning. I think there might have been 15 of us in a room normally holding many hundereds. Most people were asleep or in bed seasick but Stephen didn't care that there were so few of us. He played his heart out and those few of us there were truly blessed to see it. You will be very missed Stephen. I hope you're having a great jam session wherever you are.

Stephen,
Bob here, Hope you got my letter, I meant every word. I was so fortunate to have had you for a friend. The days we spent over at Meekerville and sharing that house on Horne St. were truly magic. Being around you, Jan, Phil White and the Boys, George, Flex, T Bone, Sumpter, Gary, Ed, Lionel, Jim, Julie, DeeDee, Patty, Sandy, Ganzer, Ron Cooper, Kris, Rita,Michelle & of course, Arneeta & Leonard, was a constant inspiration, you all helped my creativity flourish
Reading through the pages of tribute, love and admiration helps to ease the pain, but Brother, I will always miss you. We all will miss you. You left us so much, and in your passing, you have created a FAMILY that stretches around the World. I hope that someday all of us can be together @ Kincaids in your honor.
Bob Shaw
Dear Stephen-
Having been your friend in Austin in the 80s, and marrying Bob who had a whole different set of your friends to become my family, has always kept you close. The Vanity Fair photo was so great, I was so happy for you! That seems so long ago, yet it really wasn't. Your wife and all your family are in my thoughts.

As I have gone back and listened to all of your cd's since your passing, all I can conclude is that "You have given it up to the Bigger Wheel". God Bless you and I hope that as you join that band in the heavens, your sense of humour is still intact. Will be missing you on the last Sandy Beaches Cruise this 2010.

Dear Stephen
are you really gone? I can still feel you here at home. Lucky and doozy do too. Lucky barks at nothing and the lights go off for the no reason, the chimes you bought for my birthday ring when the air is still. Doozy is still waiting for you to take her to the colorando river to pray on your cliff. You have been so missed around here. I am so sorry for everything that happen to you, to us. I witness you fight so hard for 2 years as we held eachother in fear. You were a worrior here on earth and now an angel for all who loved you. Watch over us....thank you for all the amazing memories...you were my husband, through better or worse and in sickness and health. I thank you for all the memories this heart will hold forever. And thank you so much for all the beautiful people you left in my life. You are so loved by so many. I am truly blessed for the ride of 14 years with you. I will miss you forever. Lucky and Doozy will miss you forever too. I will take them to your cliff so you can sit with us. I will never stop remembering everything you gave me and all the lesson we shared. I will see you when I get there
stay well my angel.....love always....your wife (Boo)

I knew Stephen from the Artist Violin Shop out in Poly in the late 1960's. He could do it all and simply said, his fingers would fly. A few years later, about 1972 Earl Prince built Stephen a flat top acoustic guitar. Then Mr. Prince became ill and retired. Stephen probably got the last Earl Prince guitar that was made. Earl's guitars and banjos were perfection if you had the hands and soul to play them.
In the spring of what I think was 1974 I called Earl to say good bye since he was not doing well. Earl told me that he had just heard from Stephen. Stephen had held the phone to the guitar while he played it for Earl. It was a moment Kodak could not comprehend.
Fame and fortune never forgot those that brought you.
Earl told me that he had saved the best for last. It was obvious that Stephen was established as world class then so it was a huge compliment. For Stephen to show this kindness to Earl Prince is a testimony that Stephen was a world class kind of guy.

Found out about Stephen at a time when I was falling apart.Met him several times-what a kind guy.Really a BIG Brother to me.A very healthy influence on my thinking.Heard"This Train Is Gone" arriving in the Hill Country, escaping my past.Knocked me deeply straight thru to my heart.Bought every recording, got to interview him twice, and saw him perform with Bob,Johnny, and by himself. He taught me some fine chords down at The Hill Top,and when I asked,so nervously,he sat down and transcribed "Acts Of God" on a dinner placemat, and then asking again,he sighned it,T.S.Bruton.I love him.Heartbroken...to hear of his...death.

Believing he would not be taken was the only option. Now, I'm believing he saw his way that day in LA and he moved on and beyond with all our love, admiration, and respect.
Stephen, you will always be alive and well in our hearts, we'll keep laughing at your jokes, and your music will be loved, appreciated, and heard while dancin in the streets, saxon, or spirit world.
Thank you for living life in front of us. R.I.P. and keep on playin!

One of the best shows I ever attended in was in September of 2007, when Stephen was finally able to get back to touring (after his first round of cancer treatment) and he played Mississippi Studios, an intimate club/listening room in Portland. So happy to finally be back on the road, he played for nearly three hours and absolutely floored the 70 or so folks who were there. It was truly a special night. Stephen was genuinely thrilled and planned to return to Portland, but that wasn't to be. It's the last time I saw him, but what I'll always remember.
And thanks Lewis, Deedee and Chris for giving folks an opportunity to share their thoughts and memories.

I have known Stephen for over 25 years. He came out before a Kris concert in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire and was just so friendly that I became a fan. His ability to make you feel like you were best friends was special. Over the years we got to become friends and he helped make a dream come true for me by helping get a foot in the music business. Because of Stephen, I met and worked for Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Alejandro Escovedo on tour and in the studio as well as helping out on Little Whisper tours. Stephen started me on my road back to God and I thank him for that. He always found the time to leave a phone message or drop an email to let me know he was coming to my area. Stephen was and will always be a hero to me and I was privileged to call him friend. I will miss you and love you forever. Thanks for the music, the laughs and your friendship. Vaya con Dios.

Phil White introduced me to Stephen over three decades ago. And to borrow a line from Jerry Maguire, "he had me at hello." I can remember the unbridled excitement erupting in me every time I would see his compact beige BMW in front of the Hop. And Stephen would always graciously comply when his fan club, my silly young girlfriends and I, would request the Bobby Womack song, "I'm in Love" and pretend he was singing that lyric to us. I remember being in the backseat of the beige BMW in the late 70s riding around the hills of Malibu laughing uncontrollably at Stephen and Phil in front bantering their witticisms. I am so blessed to have encountered Stephen's kind soul, to hear his poetry in music, and to have such fond memories. And now that Stephen and Phil have gone within eight months time, for me, the link to music, wit, and youth is broken. I extend my sincere condolences to Stephen's family and friends. God's peace be with you.

I had the pleasure of attending AHHS with Stephen and graduating with him in 1966. I remember him as a warm lovable person with many friends, who touched many lives even at that early age. The entire student body of AHHS, past, present, and future, will miss Stephen and his smiling face. But his music will live on forever.

Sumpter and Mrs Bruton,
Stephen was a very wonderful person apart from his music. I will always remember the kindness he gave my mom one Christmas at your house. I came for "pie" and met Stephen and just got a taste of the kindness that all these people keep mentioning. I am so sorry for your loss and your Mom's loss of her sweet son. I have been keeping up with Stephen's illness through Pat and I have been praying for him for a long time. He is with his Lord now and surely singing and playing for my mom and a lot of other saints up there and now he is healed completely! Love to you. If I can do anything please let me know.

Stephen will be sadly missed, he was a true Gentleman and an inspiration to all. He was a big part of making the Iron Horse Pub the venue it is today and Stephen was a great role model in a very tough industry. And you gave us some memories that we'll have till we die!
I've read entire books just to "get it"....while you could get the same point across in only one or two lines or verses in a song - - - always amazing. Philosopher, poet, counseler, artist, and REAL!
Your accompaniment of Kris was always so top notch and quality - but like everything, that ended. As you wrote: "everything happens for a reason, and that's why things happen that way"...and for you, I believe the days of the Borderlords had to end so you could become all that Stephen Bruton could be.
Some lines of some songs just stick, and you seem to walk down the road with them forever. One of yours is in me: "What makes you grow old is replacing hope with regret." You're the kind of inspiration that raises the bar for Saturday afternoon songwriters like me.
When you played with Kris 5 or 6 years ago in San Francisco, after the show, and after I got Kris to sign my guitar, I asked you to do the same - you looked at me and said "man, this is a nice guitar, are you sure you want me to do that?" I'm sure glad you did!
We'll miss you Stephen. The river runs deep!

Stephen was simply one of the warmest, most genuine people my wife and I have ever had the fortune of befriending; a true favorite that we will sorely miss. Armed with a wonderful sense of humor, quick wit and a wicked grin, its no wonder so many people truly loved the man as we did. What I remember best about Stephen besides his prodigious talent (which was already very much in evidence in high school) was his kindness and generosity of spirit. At a time when the daily reality of school seemed more like an emotional version of "Lord of the Flies" than an experience in education, Stephen's goodness stood out. Stephen was a musical and spiritual thread that wove through so many of our lives. Musicians and music lovers - sinners and saints. His influence on me and my family was profound. Thanks Stephen for helping me reconcile with music and thanks for taking me along on the ride these past few years. It was an honor to play your songs with you. You will be forever missed and eternally remembered. God's speed my friend and may God bless Mary and your family.

Words do not suffice to tell what a talented and generous person Stephen was. I was privilaged to meet him in Jamaica with Little Feat in 2005 and witness some performances that in my opinion were never equaled in subsequent Feat Camps with other guest artists. Hearing Stephen with Paul Barrere and Coco Montoya (another guest artist) along with the rest of the best band in the world was indescribable. I was later able to reconnect with Stephen in L.A. at a private show and reminisce about Jamaica and our devotion to Little Feat. Through his association with Delbert McClinton I learned more about him including his funny side.Listening to him tell stories about his days on the road with Delbert was hysterical. His talent was exceeded only my his goodness, warmth, humility and sense of humanity. Thanks Stephen for being so nice to a fan. Rest in Peace, you are sorely missed.

There is a hole in my heart for the Bruton family and it will never be filled. I was blessed to have known the smile, twinkle in the eye, heart felt laugh and smile of Stephen Bruton. Mary you had 13 wonderful years and so did Stephen. My thoughts are with you and the family with the passing and rebirth of the Warrior's gentle soul.

Stephen's music came right from his heart and soul. It could make you laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time. It sure touched me deeply and I will never forget him. He was a kind person who generously shared himself through his music which was a wonderful gift he gave us. Thank you Stephen and God Bless You.

Stephen was not only a great singer, songwriter,& musician. I first met him at the central group. He had found his way out of the darkness and into the "Sunlight of the Spirit". For many years he helped so many others find the new road to a happy, joyous, & free life. Whenever I had the good fortune to run into him around town and the subject came around to this new way of life we had both been Graced with, his face would light up. He knew that we had been given the gift of a wonderful way of living and he truely loved sharing it with anyone who was wanting help. GOD Bless and keep you in his Loving embrace. I know that you are at the Big Meeting in the Sky! Thanks for sharing, Stephen.

Grief
I wish I had the words to comfort you,
In all your pain and grief.
But I know there’s nothing I can say or do,
to help you find relief.
Your numbness will soon subside,
and the pain and tears will be real.
Just remember no matter what,
It’s ok to feel what you feel.
Each day may seem like a burden,
sometimes it will be hard to face.
But he will never stop loving you,
just because he’s in a new and better place
He will live on in your hearts,
you will all have memories to share.
And when your time on earth is through,
with open arms he will be waiting for you there.

Dear Bruton Family, I was fortunate to see Stephen perform at the Iron Horse Pub in Wichita Falls in December of 2008. He was performing with his long time friends Mike O'Neill and Lewis Stephens. It was a great evening and my wife Carol and I consider ourselves very lucky to have seen him. He was fabulous entertainer and a really warm, sincere person. As it turned out we are very distantly related by marriage, who would have thought it, as one of our sons-in-law's aunts is Sumter 's wife Pat. Small world. This world has lost a great human being in Stephen. He will be missed greatly.
Please accept our deepest and sincere sympathy during this time.

Dear Bruton Family, my wife and I were very fortunate to see Stephen perform at the Iron Horse Pub in Wichita Falls in December of 2008. He was performing with his long time friends Mike O'Neill and Lewis Stephens. It was a great evening and my wife Carol and I consider ourselves very lucky to have seen him. He was fabulous entertainer and a really warm, sincere person. He did an accoustic set to try out new material on a live audience. He had on his glasses and was reading the words for yellow legal sheets in his guitar case. He absolutely had the entire room in his hands. Nothing new there.

i was in LA in 2005 working, a very lonely Fort Worth native, and i read that Stephen was playing at The Mint in Santa Monica... so i took a $54 cab ride (well worth it!) across town to see him play, and the club was full of Texans there to see him. Felt like home - especially when he remembered my name. He was a shining light on earth that will forever light up our Texas evening sky. My prayers and condolences to Mary, Sumpter, the entire Bruton family and all the friends who loved him so.
