Arthur Ehlmann Obituary

Dr. Arthur J. Ehlmann FORT WORTH -- Dr. Arthur J. Ehlmann, Emeritus Professor of Geology, passed away suddenly on Saturday, August 19, 2017. He spent that Saturday morning doing what he loved best--looking at a new meteorite and visiting with his colleagues. MEMORIAL SERVICE: 2 to 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28, at Robert Carr Chapel on the TCU Campus with a reception to follow. MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be sent to the Arthur J. Ehlmann Scholarship, TCU Box 297044, Fort Worth, TX 76129. Established by former students to honor his dedication, commitment and impact on their lives. Born May 18, 1928, in St. Charles, Missouri, Art finished high school and enlisted in the Army. He went on to receive a B.S. and M.S. in Geology from the University of Missouri at Columbia and then went to work for Shell Oil Company. Art married Rita Butler in 1956 and had two children, Julia and Wesley. He received his Ph.D. in Mineralogy in 1958 from the University of Utah. Art then began a long and distinguished career in the Department of Geology at Texas Christian University. Rita passed away in 1983. In 1985 he married Carol Courtney. As a professor, he was the consummate teacher, researcher, departmental chair, mentor and colleague during his many years at TCU. Retiring in 1993, Emeritus Professor, Art Ehlmann began a second career as a volunteer curator of the newly acquired Oscar E. Monnig Meteorite Collection. He was instrumental in bringing this valuable collection to TCU through his long-term friendship with Mr. Monnig. Working closely with the Smithsonian Institution, he helped develop the collection into one of the largest and most prestigious private collections in the world. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Henry Ehlmann and Viola Elizabeth Phillips; first wife, Rita; and brother, Elroy Wayne Ehlmann. SURVIVORS: Art is survived by his wife, Carol Ehlmann; daughter, Julia Ehlmann Campbell and husband, Michael; son, Wesley Bryant and wife, Mary Ellen. Stepchildren include Claire Graham and husband, Hank, Chris Courtney and wife, Deonna, Cliff Courtney, and Corinne Dodson. Grandchildren, Ryan Swink Campbell, Kelly Campbell Hohmann and husband, Jared, Daniel Arthur Ehlmann and wife, Maribeth and Joseph Robert Ehlmann; and numerous step-grandchildren who loved camping with Grandpa Art.

I met Dr. Elhmann at a senior's class he was generous enough to teach at TCC. What an amazing, kind and big brained person. Rest in peace Dr. in the "deep time" you so often spoke of. Rocks, meteorites and humans all over the world will miss you.

Dr. Ehlmann was one of my very favorite professors. I learned so much Geology from him and I still share that knowledge with my students. He was a great geologist and a fine person.

Art was so much fun to be around . Especially on our camping or fossil hunting trips. A wealth of knowledge about everything. My boys would talk about the trips for days. Wonderful times. Art will be greatly missed by all. Carol and the family I do miss and love all of you very much.

Art was one of the good guys, and I will always remember his kindness and helpfulness when I wrote a brochure about the Monnig meteorite collection. His reputation preceded him, but I found him every bit as wonderful as people said. My heartfelt condolences to Carol and Claire.

Carol, Claire,Art was a wonder! I always felt welcome when around him. He was obviously an inspiration to many people, not just his students. I know you are greatly saddened by this loss and pray God's comfort will hold you as you adjust to his absence. I love you girls so much! Eulaine McIntosh

From time to time in a person's life, we meet people and get to know them and we ourselves become a better person for knowing them. Art was one of those people for me. He was my graduate adviser and a very dear life long friend. For this, I am and shall forever be profoundly grateful. Dennis Markovchick (78)

Though, I sadly did not have the privilege to meet Dr. Ehlmann, it is truly an honor to work with his daughter, Julia and her family in my job with the USDA. My deepest condolences to the family on this sudden loss. May God and His Almighty angels hold you and your family in the palms of His hands. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you all.
