Cecil Munn Obituary

Cecil Edwin Munn Jr. died peacefully Friday afternoon, Nov. 18, 2011, during his 88th year. Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church of Fort Worth, 1000 Penn St. Memorials: In lieu of usual remembrances, consideration of contributions to the Alzheimer's Association or the Humane Society of North Texas, 1801 E. Lancaster, Fort Worth, Texas 76103, in his memory, is suggested. Cecil Munn was born Aug. 8, 1923, in Enid, Okla., to Cecil E. and Margaret Kittrell Munn. In 1948 he married Carolyn Taylor Culver. His deep affection for her was often expressed by his simple proclamation, "I married up." He was a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and of Harvard Law School, where he graduated with honors. He was actively engaged in the practice of law. He began his practice in 1947 in private practice with a firm in Enid, Okla. He then joined the law department of Champlin Petroleum, where he became vice president and general counsel, and later was named a director of the corporation. In 1960, he joined the Fort Worth firm of Cantey & Hanger as partner; upon his retirement, he was pleased to serve of counsel. His biography was first published in "Who's Who in America" in 1964 and has been included in every edition since. When asked about his working philosophy, Cecil quoted, "It is amazing how much can be accomplished if one is unconcerned with who gets the credit." Cecil loved his chosen profession. He was an active member of the American Bar Association, serving in 1970-1971 as national chairman of the Natural Resources Law section. In 1992, he received the Blackstone Award from the Tarrant County Bar Association for "exemplifying the highest attributes of the legal profession." He was also a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers. He was devoted to his family and loved being in the company of close friends, of which there were many. His was an outgoing personality with an intellectual, amiable sense of humor, modest yet never shy, often joking and laughing, and never taking himself too seriously. He was consistently kind and considerate of the feelings of others. Cecil was preceded in death by his parents; an older brother, William Munn; and a younger sister, Margaret Ann Munn Treadwell. Survivors: In addition to his wife of 63 years, Carolyn Culver Munn, Cecil is survived by his son, Franklin Culver Munn and his wife, Jan, of Tulsa, Okla.; daughter, Charlotte Kittrell Munn Ward and her husband, Dennis, of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Justin Brian Munn and his wife, Kelly, Claire Munn Portolese and her husband, Matt, Clayton Davis Forswall and his wife, Emily, and Carolyn Forswall Dollahite and her husband, Henry; great-grandchildren, MaryClaire, Finley, Joseph and Jack; brother-in-law, Swift Treadwell of Memphis, Tenn.; nieces and nephews, Cecile Munn Fowler of Phoenix, Ariz., William W. Munn of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jewett Treadwell and Swift Treadwell Jr. of Memphis, Tenn., Peter Treadwell of Franklin, Tenn., and Phillip Treadwell of Enid, Okla.

It was an honor to know Cecil Munn. I was a guest in his home once and will always remember his kindness, laughter, intelligence and grace. Truly a one of a kind individual. My thoughts are with Carolyn and the family at this difficult time.

Charlotte, Clayton & Carolyn - Robert and I are thinking of you and the loss of your father and grandfather. Alzheimer's is a horrible thing to happen to any family. We only visited with Cecil a few times, but he was a character! Take care and please tell Mrs. Munn we are thinking of her also.

Dear Mrs. Munn, Charlotte and family,

Mother and I were saddened to hear of your loss.

Being in high school, and maybe a bit nervous around a friend's parents can sometimes be awkward, but Mr. Munn always had a kind word and a warm smile which put me at ease and this was a wonderful feeling. What lucky girls you are to have had such a wonderful man in your life! Our prayers and thoughts are with you.

Carolyn, Although the Cecil Munn I knew was not the same person you and I visited in his nursing home last winter, I am glad I got to see him one more time and will always remember him as a fine gentleman and the best lawyer I have known. I have missed him for some years now, so I hope he is in a better place where we might, if I am lucky, meet again. Charles Zubieta

Cecil was an outstanding member of his Enid High School Class as well as the Enid Community. He was a pleasure to have around. I will miss Cecil; even though, I haven't had the pleasure of visiting with him in recent years.
