Fernando was a gifted athlete who excelled at several sports, but he had an absolute passion for baseball beginning at the age of 5. He played baseball in high school, throughout college at UTSA and semi-professionally. Eventually, he transitioned to softball and continued to play several nights a week with his softball family. Fernando was preceded in death by his mother, Carlota Ayala, and brother-in-law, Gregorio Bernal Jr. Survivors: Wife, Vivian; son, Ben; stepchildren, Michael, Daniel, Amanda and Ruth; father, Fernando M. Ayala; sister, Yolanda Ayala Bernal; nephews, Greg III and wife, Connie, Vicente and wife, Kristie, and Fernando; and other family members and friends.
