Floyd Owens Obituary
Floyd Owens passed away Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013. He was 97. Funeral: 3 p.m. Saturday in Laurel Land Chapel of Chimes in Fort Worth. Interment: Laurel Land Memorial Park of Fort Worth. Floyd was born July 25, 1916, in Longworth, Fisher County, the son of Jerome Kirby and Minnie McClendon Owens. His formal education was secondary to the demands of the family farm. In October 1937, he married his soulmate, Frances Pauline Cox, continuing to work as a short order cook at various cafes before joining the Navy in 1941. After tours in the Pacific, including Iwo Jima, Floyd left the Navy in 1945 to join the workforce. While raising two daughters with Pauline, he took ownership of a Morton's Food distributorship in Amarillo, eventually transferring to San Angelo in 1957. In 1966, Floyd sold his company to purchase a franchise store from Armstrong McCall Beauty Supply. His beauty supply store experiences took him from San Angelo to Corpus Christi, Wichita Falls, then back to San Angelo. He eventually sold the San Angelo store to his youngest daughter, Karon Jones, and opened up his last store in Brownwood. Finally, at the age of 87, he retired and moved to Burleson to be near his daughter and son-in-law, Marquetta and Larry Whitfield. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Southside Masonic Lodge #1114, Southside Polytechnic Chapter #378, Southside Polytechnic Council #315 and Southside Commandery #83, serving more than 50 years in Masonry. Survivors: His wife of 76 years, Pauline Owens; daughter, Marquetta and her husband, Larry Whitfield; daughter, Karon Jones; grandchildren, Chris Whitfield, Lincoln Jones, Wayne Jones and Kara DeVaul; and 10 great-grandchildren.
