Gloria Hicks Obituary
Gloria Hicks, 67, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, after suffering a ruptured brain aneurysm. Graveside service: 3 p.m. Tuesday in Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Humane Society of the United States or to the TCU Athletics Program. Gloria was born Sept. 5, 1946, in Port Arthur, the daughter of Gene C. and Lois Hicks. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur and attended Texas Christian University graduating in 1969 with a degree in physical education. After college, Gloria was hired by the YMCA and embarked on what would become a 29-year career with the Y. She spent many of those years at the E.R. Van Zant Family Branch near Hulen Mall, where she was responsible for classes, membership and fundraising, including Step up for Kids Campaign, and was membership director at the time of her retirement. Gloria was a devoted fan of TCU Horned Frogs football, never missing a home game and attended most all the post-season bowl games since 1984, including the 2011 Rose Bowl. Besides TCU football, she enjoyed attending the Men's Basketball and Baseball games, Fort Worth Cats minor league baseball games and, of course, Texas Rangers games. In fact, her knowledge of Major League Baseball and its history was impressive. Gloria was also known by her many friends for her love of animals, especially her cats who were the joy of her life. She loved plants and gardening, stamp collecting, and took great delight in the Christmas season each year. Gloria was preceded in death by her father, Gene C. Hicks. The family would like to thank the doctors of Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in downtown Fort Worth and the staff of the Neurological ICU, as well as the staff of Community Hospice of Texas at the James L. West Special Care Center, for their professional and caring support. Survivors: Mother, Lois Hicks; friend and lifelong companion, Roy Bacus Jr.; special friends, Robert McDaniel and wife, Ecy, all of Fort Worth; cousins, Michael Moriarty of Kent, Wash., and Maureen Moriarty of Seattle, Wash.
