Homer Harvey Horton Jr. was born Jan. 28, 1946, in Coleman to Homer Harvey Horton and Amy Sanders Horton. He grew up in Coleman and Brownwood. In 1967, Homer started Horton Tree Service in Fort Worth and later became a utility contractor when he started Northeast Service Inc. Homer retired in 2008, letting his sons run the businesses he started, and moved back to Coleman. On Dec. 22, 2009, Homer married Laurie Jennings in Coleman. Homer was a very passionate and caring man. He touched everyone he came in contact with in some way. He never met a stranger and could call the wrong number and talk for 30 minutes, making a new friend. He worked hard, but always had time for his boys, whether it was throwing the ball around or fixing a mini-bike. Homer loved classic cars and often loaned several in his collection out for the parades in Coleman. He was a member of the Coleman County Chamber of Commerce, Agriculture and Tourist Bureau, Lake Brownwood Lions Club, charter member of the Texas Chapter of International Society of Arboriculture and a member of First Baptist Church in Coleman. Homer was preceded in death by three sisters, Joyce Schafer, Francis Johnson and Dixie Baldwin; and one brother, George Horton. Survivors: Wife, Laurie Horton of Coleman; sons, Tommy Horton and wife, Mary, of Decatur, Ricky Horton and wife, Ronda, of Weatherford, Danny Horton and wife, Barbara, of Boyd, and Johnny Horton and wife, Tina, of Godley; stepchildren, Jimmy Ishmael of Blum and Jeanie Stevenson and husband, Slade, of Belton; sisters, Patsy Ruth Gray of Mount Ida, Ark., Sadie Mae Wood and husband, Charlie, of Coleman and Linda Louise Gober of Brownwood; brother, David Ray Horton and wife, Nancy, of Lake Brownwood; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren, with three more great-grandchildren on the way.
