James D. "Jim" Mathews Obituary
James "Jim" D. Mathews, 75, departed this earth to be with his heavenly Father on Sunday, April 21, 2013. Jim was the last of six children, who all preceded him in death.
Funeral: 3:30 p.m. Friday in Greenwood Chapel. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood Funeral Home.
Jim, the son of James Mathews and Jennie Martin Mathews, was born May 19, 1937, in Portage, Wis. At the age of 9, he moved to Arroyo Grande, Calif., where he lived until he graduated from high school and enlisted in the Air Force in 1955. He retired from the Air Force in 1982 as a senior master sergeant with 27 years of service. He then went to work for the GSA where he worked for 10 additional years before retirement.
It was while stationed in Fort Worth that he met and then married his wife, Gloria Markum. They were married for 56 years and had two children.
Jim loved and participated in many sporting activities while in high school and in the Air Force, then later enjoyed watching them on TV. He will be remembered by many as the father and grandfather who cheered at his children's and grandchildren's sporting activities. He also loved hunting, fishing and camping. He also enjoyed sharing this enjoyment with his family.
Jim was always a loving husband, son, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law and friend. This loving man will be missed by so many.
Survivors: Wife of 56 years, Gloria Mathews; children, James D. "David" Mathews III and wife, Peggy, and Sherry Mathews; grandchildren, Jason Mathews, Alisha Reedy and husband, Andy, and Kevin Mathews; great-grandchildren, Destiny Mathews, Deja Mathews and Abigail Reedy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
